One of my favorite things to do in magic is take older decks and find a way to make a replica of that deck and play it in today's environment. One of my favoite decks of all time was Necropotence. To be exact, my favorite Necro deck was played by Brian Davis at PT: Chicago in 1999. I saw just how powerful that deck was, and I really wanted to play it in this environment. Here's Brian's list from way back in 1999....

As we all know, none of those cards are legal in T2 right now. (Yes I know swamp...shut up). Basically his deck was made to empty there hand, get immense amounts of cards with Necropotence, and gain the life back and deal damage to your opponent at the same time. Here's my list (still in progress....and theres no SB yet.)

4x Douse In Gloom
4x Dark Confidant
4x Phyrexian Arena
4x Hypnotic Specter
4x Distress
3x Swallowing Plague
4x Consume Spirit
4x Eradicate
4x Last Gasp
4x Soul Feast
21x Swamp

The way I like to rebirth decks is to find the modern equivelent. Here's the rundown
Necropotence - Phyrexian Arena/Dark Confidant
Duress/Unmask- Distress/Hypnotic Specter
Spinning Darkness- Swallowing Plague/Last Gasp/Soul Feast
Corrupt/Drain Life- see above

Im missing some effects such as massive removal and the search ability from Disk and Demonic Consultation. I feel though i have enough removal and enough card drawing engines that the both are made up for.

I'm sure I'll get harsh critisisms (i cant speel) but the more i get the better! (sb suggestions will be great also) thank in advance!!

play more land. 21 is not nearly enough. I'm npot sure even 23 would be enough for that deck

Plague Boiler anyone? Pretty much a Larry Nevin's Disk. Anyway, I really like this idea, and I too remember that deck.. It was around the same time as The deadly insect/barbed sextant deck that I often reference... Those were the days.

The card is Nihilistic Glee. It's definitely interesting, but it probably won't work in this format.

Confidant and Arena are both great cards, but there closer to Ohpidian or Jayemade Tome than to Necropotence. Confidant/Arena give you a big advantage in the long term, Necro does immediately.

the plague boiler looks good. perhaps i can work in golgari signets and that card. i will prolly take out the eradicates and some other stuff for golgari signets and the boiler. i think i need more land too, but im not sure what i will take out for land.. any suggestions?

the signets and boiler do not mix. I like quicksand in this monochrome deck.

the cards that u are running over the cards from the older necro deck are alot more expensive mana wise. Your deck would be about 2x slower than the decklist that u showed us. u dont have dark rit either.

Plague boiler would kill confidant and arena making it retarded.

I think u need to splash a color. There are alot of guild colors that u could use if u used a color. White would give u some pretty sexy removal. Green would give u mana acceleration and putrefy. Red would give u more discard. U could U-b aggro with blue.

Nihilistic glee would be crazy if u could get it too work. I dont think u could though.

i see your point in that boiler would be bad because it blows up confidant and arena. however, so did disk. and brian davis actaully used the disk in one case to blow up the necro and get his draw phase back ( not to mention he killed a sylvan library). i know thats really a desperation move, but he also had the option.

quicksand seems a1 super awesome. i believe that should fit in the deck. the question is how many do i run?

if we did add another color, i would vote for white becuase of wrath and faiths fetters. not to mention castigate.

making this into a brian hacker type necro deck is the complete opposite of what im (were) trying to make this deck. im not saying your idea is bad, but its just not how i want this deck to function.

keep the ideas coming guys, im really looking foward to making some changes as soon as we can decide whether we will splash a color (and which color) or not. i really appreciate your help!

well here is my suggestion/s...

-2 dark confidant ( to much cc especial with my suggestions)

+1 Death of a Thousand Stings ( well Corrupt is not t2 so we have to look at the other choices.. in my opinion this as 1 off is cool and fits perfect in the deck and the deck theme cool name too Very Happy)
+3 Kokusho, the Evening Star (obv)
+1 Nightmare Void ( a 5th disstress that u can recrut back and never underistimate the fact that u can let him dicard a land card with nightmare void Very Happy)
+1 Exile into Darkness(well swallowing plauge and gloom are funny and so but they arent very good exile is cool it is recrutable and kills winnies without target them very cool name also Wink)
+ 2 Stinkweed imp (look above)
+3 Nezumi Shortfang ( i like him more then the hypo cause he is a clock once he flips and a musst kill unflipped the only thing i dont like on him is he can be needled but for the rest i find him better then hypno)
+2 Shred Memory (searches for nezumi,disstress,last gasp , shoel if u want, confidant and the most important Consume Spirit.. there u have ur tutor Wink)
+2 Quicksand( kills the nasty paladins and hands, also a bit similar to the flavour of wasteland)

ok so what we have now ..

4x Sickening Shoal
2x Shred Memory
2x Dark Confidant
4x Phyrexian Arena
3x Nezumi Shortfang
4x Distress
1x Nightmare Void
3x Kokusho, the Evening Star

2x Shred Memory (well takes the place of Planar Void)

1x Death denied (tried to put 1 in the main but didnt found place very cool brings back ur creatures and u can search for it with the shred memory )

3x Persecute (obv) (could also be a cranial extrahation)

2x Execute ( 1 of it could also be a eradicate or a last gasp)

2 x Slay ( 1 of it could also be a eradicate or a last gasp)

1x Nightmare Void



well i hope u liked what i had to say Smile

edit: i was also thinking about removing last gasp for Kiku's Shadow cause the shadow pretty much can kill more then last gasp does
it kills dragons it kills all the 4/4 running arround
ok its not a instant and it cant kill 1/3 or 2/3
but i rather cant kill sum of them instead of 4/4 and draagons or other big hitters if got what i mean
ok there is another + for last gasp -/- cannt be regenarated or prevented but i dont see much of these stuff in t2 anyway
but now a+ for shadow jitte cant stop shadow from killing a creature well sofar i think shadow is a bit better (for mono)

im going to have to try that list apos...there are some card choices in there that look pretty saucy. i really like shred memory. it could be be useful. but i like hypnotic specter better than the nezumi for some reason. i guess well have to find out which one is better

Smile ..yep ..i made another changes with the land base since i play koku i added shizo and tomb of urami for sum situations
and cut 2 swamps

sb looks now like this a bunch of 1 ofs xD


3x shadow of doubt
2xcranial(i fear ideal and heartbeat combo)
2xpithing needle (heartbeat combo , jitte and other nasty stuff)1xpersecute
1x nightmare void
1xdeath denied (vs decks with much removmal)
1xstinkweed imp (kodama of the north tree other no targets and hordes)
1xslay (testing)
1x execute(testing)

sideboard looks good too. i wont be testing this deck (wont be testing it MUCH) untl after regionals because ill be testing for regionals (no im playing this deck =)) but if someone does and can prove it...they are my new favorite person. keep the ideas coming kids!
