It was definitely not a shriekmaw.

Shriekmaw would be horrible in this deck. There would be very few ways for it to be useful. On aether vial you would have to wait 5 turns and make your vial useless for other creatures, or mainphase 2 mana to not even stick a blocker.

The Emerikul is just for the reshuffles and the bluff right? Really no way to play the big 15/15, correct?

This deck is pretty solid. You have to watch the deck tech to see how it interacts. The loyal retainers is used to pop in Iona or emrakul with the shuffle on the stack. He says he uses the shamans because your not always going to get a survival within the first few turns, so having a slower survival can be enough to win especially if you can slow your opponent down.
