hey everybody. i seem to play magic off and on every year or so, always finding i don't have the extra cash to finance a serious addiction. who knows if this will be the time i stick with it or not, but whatever. i think i'm a moderately good player, I've only ever been to 3 friday night magics, 2 were draft, 1 constructed, and was in top 3 in 2 of them and 1 another. So, what I'm getting at is I'm not an idiot, I just need a jump start into the new metagame, and I'm wondering what a good deck is to start up with in this new t2. Any ideas? Thanks!

Try mono red... Its relatively cheap (compared to most decks) in addition to being very consistent and pretty good in the meta.

i don't really care about cheapest, as i intend to play mostly online since magic is really just a giant money pit. once testing is done online maybe i'll build the deck and go school some noobs or something.
and i know top 3 in fnm doesn't mean that much, but my point is i know how to play the game. its possible that at least 2 of those were wins too, i just can't remember if i won the constructed one or if i took second to my buddy. i'm pretty sure that when i get into it i'm at least good enough to post good ratings at regionals, i just never seem to be able to make it out to them because of work or other such crap. but thanks for the few pieces of advice so far, i appreciate it.

I'd say mono red is a pretty straightforward place to get back into the game. Kithkins wouldn't be bad either. Check the Magic Decks part of this website.

Faeries and Five Coloured Control is also a big part of the metagame, but both of those are relatively expensive.

4 Magma Spray
4 Flame Javelin
4 Incinerate

4 Boggart Ram-Gang
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Stigma Lasher
4 Ashenmoor Gouger
4 Demigod of Revenge

4 Ghitu Encampment
20 Mountain

4 Unwilling Recruit
4 Chaotic Backlash
4 Everlasting Torment
3 Hell's Thunder

This is the red deck, you see its pretty straight forward. The magma sprays can be changed to shock but keep the persisting creatures in mind.

If u wanna play on a higher level try any other standard deck, faeries can be good if played right, ultimatum control is a cool deck and the deck to beat at the moment is kithkin.

sweet, thanks for all of the advice. back when lorwyn had just came out i played faeries a bit, good to see that one is still pretty good. i had a no-rare kithkin deck too that was pretty cool too, bet that could use some upgrading now that i'm just using magic workstation. i also used to run black/green elves, is that still any good? haven't seen it in the decks section really. i really like Doran too, 3 cost 5/5s are way cool, are there any aggro decks based on him?

Doran is a good, fast beater on his own, but it is not worth it to use high-thoughness creatures with him. Better to use him with other cost-efficient beaters like Chameleon Colossus.
