Another 4-3-2-2 draft felt the deck played alot better than it looked though it was admitedly a little top heavy, was 1-0 up in round 2 when i played skeletonize in a good position having been told the bug was only affecting a few games sure enough it did effect this game and both me and my opponent were dropped.

Cancel
Savage Hunger
Naturalize
Rakeclaw Gargantuan

5 drop slot looking pretty full but this card is that much more powerfull than anything else it is worth it.

Pack 3 pick 6:
Obelisk of Naya
--> Outrider of Jhess
Mountain
Guardians of Akrasa
Goblin Mountaineer

1 goblin death raider

Games Round 1 ugw i get on my beat with grixis battlemage, he trades court archers for tidehollow strix, he drops panckae flipper, I bloodpyre elemental it and continue to beat he stalls on 4 lands, I get corpse conniseur goodness going and with the help of skeletonize are able to force through enough damage for the win. Game 2 he stalls on 2 forests after a mull, I curve put this happens all to often in this format.

Round 2 grw I get some beats in with grixis battlemage killing any relevant threat he plays, I get my conniseur chain going again and win. Game 2 He gets in soem early beats and areable to start beating down with connoissur but he has the 1 mana anti graveyard thing so I a uable to start chaining cards, i am still able to start beating with conniseur thanks to fate sticher, in response to him making the green alage dude with shroud I skeletonize and this time it bugs out and we both endup being dropped from tournament.

Feedback appreciated.

As much as I love Viscera Dragger you 'could' have taken the metallurgeon in that pack. I think it's a really strong card even if all you get is a Sanctum Gargoyle or the flying deathtouch guy to go with it.

But then you're going into a shard, and it's my least favourite for drafting.

Pack 2, pick 5: I'd say Jungle Weaver or Drumhunter are the strongest picks in that pack. I would have taken the cycling guy as you'd probably wind up playing it if you're playing the Jund Charm.

Pack 3, pick 3: I like splinters a lot more than the grey ogre looter. Unless you're heavy RB aggro I think he's pretty average. (Although that grey ogre seemed to go in for a lot of beats in your games)

I fail to see what synergy there is between Call to Heel and unearth, because the reanimated card will still get removed from the came when you bounce it.

Yeah your right I have not read unearth properly lol.

Yeah I guess i was a bit hasty calling bloodpyre elemental the best card in the pack.

But i did not have a jund charm or any good green cards, I was solidly UBR.

Lol I'm sure I saw a Jund charm there... The elemental is good anyway.

Out of curiosity what happened after being dropped?

Do they reimburse you with your entry tickets? Or if you reconnect can you continue with game 3, marking that game as a draw (with a warning to the player who played it as to stop intentional use of it)

You have to file a refund request which takes 2 or 3 days and then you get your product back, plus you get to keep whatever cards you drafted so it works out ok.

For anyone interested this is aceman of modo hall of fame and many other things critique of the first part of the draft.

Got Commitment Issues? -A Shards Draft Article
Shards drafting is still fresh and new, and now it the time to wreck the queues. I hopped online for a couple 8-4s yesterday, going 2-1 and 3-0, and noticed that everyone still sucks at the format. Well… at least everyone I played against. Going 5-1 in a couple drafts is nothing to rave about… until you take into account that over these two drafts, I picked up 2 Planeswalkers, a Master of Etherium, 7 trilands, 3 charms, and close to a dozen other rares.

Normally, I would sum that up to a couple lucky drafts. But from the paper drafts I’ve done and the draftcaps I’ve read from other users in the forums, I have another theory. Going from SSE to Shards has screwed with people’s draft skills.

Want to take down a few drafts and keep the rares too? Well… it’s all about commitment. I could use one of my own drafts, but I’ll just borrow a draftcap from the forums. Trotsky1’s “Ala Ala Ala Draft No5.” Will do just fine. Let’s see if we can maximize his options (and his profits!) by analyzing early picks:

Pack 1 pick 1:
Island
Crumbling Necropolis
Courier's Capsule
--> Oblivion Ring
Jund Panorama
Ad Nauseam
Ridge Rannet
Bone Splinters
Akrasan Squire
Jungle Weaver
Rockcaster Platoon
Necrogenesis
Thorn-Thrash Viashino
Branching Bolt
Obelisk of Bant

Plenty of playables here, and a PC (pricecheck) on Ad Nauseum will tell us it’s not worth sacrificing a pick for this card. Here are the options I see: Crumbling Necropolis, Oblivion Ring, Bone Splinters, and Branching Bolt. Notice Capsule, Squire, and Rockplaster Platoon shouldn’t be considered here because O Ring is a stronger card that will almost always go in the same deck. So let’s analyze our 4 possible picks:
Necropolis: About half a ticket and good fixing is worth consideration, but it’s probably better off to start with one of the strong removal spells.
Oblivion Ring: A strong removal spell, this could very well be the pick. Most importantly, it’s a single color. This means it leaves us open to Esper, Bant, Naya, and 2 color decks: UW aggro or control and GW aggro.
Bone Splinters: Another strong removal spell, Splinters is a bit misleading as a first pick because it doesn’t play in as many archetypes as O Ring. Basically, if you go Esper, O Ring is slightly better, so even the overlapping shard points to O Ring.
Branching Bolt: Let’s compare this to our other top contender for 1st pick, O Ring. Naya can play both cards. Branching Bolt open you up to RG Aggro and Jund, while O Ring gives you two or three times as many possibilities (see above). Branching Bolt would have to be significantly better than Oblivion Ring to make this pick correct. Even if it’s slightly more powerful, that’s not enough of a reason to take it.
Conclusion: Stay open and take O Ring.

Pack 1 pick 2:
Metallurgeon
Archdemon of Unx
Blister Beetle
Cavern Thoctar
Dispeller's Capsule
Excommunicate
Bant Panorama
Call to Heel
Druid of the Anima
Spell Snip
Corpse Connoisseur
--> Viscera Dragger
Obelisk of Grixis
Forest

No money cards. Our best bets are Excommunicate, Druid of the Anima, and (probably) Viscera Dragger.
Excommunicate: This is a solid, always playable card, and the strongest white card in the pack. Picking it has an additional Bonus: You’re still completely open to a plethora of decks. Esper, Bant, Naya, UW agro or control, and GW aggro. I will need a very good reason to not take this. (Notice Metallurgeon is not as good because unlike Excommunicate, it’s significantly weaker in white decks that have green in them).
Druid of the Anima: A very good accelerator/fixer that’s best in Naya but equally good in RG or GW. It’s a decent pick, but not worth giving up the possibility of Esper or UW.
Viscera Dragger (or any black card): Why would you do this to yourself? This immediately puts you into Esper, which means you’ll need fixing down the line. If the Esper deck doesn’t come your way, either this or Oblivion Ring won’t make your final deck. Even in Esper, I’m not convinced this is really better than Excommunicate.
Conclusion: Take the Excommuniate, stay open.

Pack 1 pick 3:
Tortoise Formation
Relic of Progenitus
Hindering Light
Lush Growth
--> Executioner's Capsule
Kathari Screecher
Scavenger Drake
Knight of the White Orchid
Swamp
Agony Warp
Jund Panorama
Rhox Charger
Algae Gharial

If you took the black card last pack, time to Esper it up. You made a choice, now stick to it. Capsule and Agony Warp are both solid removal spells, but Capsule means it’s not too late to ditch blue… you might still get an agro RB deck or Jund deck and lose your O Ring, but you should be looking for an Esper deck.
If you took the Excommunicate, you can remain wide open AND take a nice rare in Knight of the White Orchid… though you don’t have to. You can Rhox Charger into a nice GW agro, or capsule/warp into Esper.
Conclusion: Capsule it is. It’s just a tiny bit worse than Agony Warp, but not so much that we want to completely cut our options. Had we taken Excom, The rare Knight would be a solid pick here that’s good for a ticket or so.

Pack 1 pick 4:
Steelclad Serpent
Metallurgeon
Cathartic Adept
Plains
Resounding Roar
Angelsong
Esper Charm
Obelisk of Jund
Lightning Talons
--> Viscera Dragger
Swamp (FOIL)
Blister Beetle

Dragger is the pick here with our previous picks. In the monowhite “would have been” deck, Resounding Roar looks solid.
Conclusion: Dragger

Pack 1 pick 5:
Obelisk of Bant
Waveskimmer Aven
--> Grixis Panorama
Shore Snapper
Necrogenesis
Incurable Ogre
Glaze Fiend
Swerve
Guardians of Akrasa
Gift of the Gargantuan
Mountain

Now we’re starting to see some of the consequences of going into black for no reason. The black has dried up, and there’s no Esper pick. In an open GW deck, We get to choose between Waveskimmer Aven, Guardians, and Gift of the Gargantuan, which are the strongest 3 cards in the pack. Instead, we have to pick between a mediocre, possibly unneeded fixer and an awkward Guardians. We’re not ready to ditch the O Ring, although we’re stuck playing some amount of black now. Guardians puts us squarely into Esper, while Grixis Panorama still gives us an exit strategy. It all comes down to this: In an Esper deck, the Grixis Panorama will still be useful.
Conclusion: We’ll take the land, but we’re not happy about this pick.

Pack 1 pick 6:
Volcanic Submersion
Minion Reflector
Cancel
Lush Growth
Onyx Goblet
Island
Cavern Thoctar
Obelisk of Jund
--> Tidehollow Strix
Corpse Connoisseur

The GW deck would have a happy Thoctar here. Instead, we have to make a crucial decision: Is blue really the way to go? Blue mean Esper which means we can play the O Ring. Corpse Connoisseur however means we can still be RB agro, and he’s solid in Esper too with our Draggers. It’s a tough pick. Let’s see if our previous decisions can help us:
We hopped out of white into some black cards, passing an Agony Warp and some Metallurgeons. While our deck is still sort of Esper colors, it doesn’t much in the way of artifact synergy. We’ve also passed some decent Naya cards in Branching Bolt, Excom, Druid of the Anima, Rhox Charger, and a few others. If I had to guess, I would say the guy to my left is Naya, and the guy after him is Esper (although this could easily be reversed based on first picks). However, it’s pretty unlikely either of them are RB agro. We haven’t passed a single relevant RB card yet… chances are someone to our right, maybe our immediate neighbor, is RB.
So where do we want to be? We have Naya and Esper to our left, and RB to our right. Our pick so far are monoblack and an O Ring, with a weak fixer. Pretty much, no matter what we pick, we’ll be fighting someone.
What happens if we take the Strix? We’re then moving into Esper, and we’ll have a tough pack 2. On top of that, we don’t have much Esper synergy, so it’ll be an uphill battle into a good deck through an Esper player.
What happens if we take the Corpse? We’re moving into RB with still a shot as Esper. We should be seeing some hot RB cards, like Blightning or Deathraiders, quite late. At this point though, even in Esper, the Corpse might have better synergy: double Dragger is quite solid with Corpse.
Conclusion: Let’s take the Corpse. Synergy, Openness, and still on target.

Pack 1 pick 7:
Sighted-Caste Sorcerer
Forest
Elvish Visionary
--> Call to Heel
Savage Hunger
Exuberant Firestoker
Ridge Rannet
Kederekt Creeper
Yoked Plowbeast

Here’s a Visionary to remind us what a nice GW deck we could have. Imagine… Pick 7 of pack 1, and we’d STILL be open to three decks (Naya, Bant, GW agro), with a decent rare and some aggressive guys.
Anyway… Not much for our Esper/RB deck now. Call to Heel is ok, but can’t be abused just yet. However, it’s still going to be the pick since we went into blue last pack. At this point, we’re semi-solid Esper. With a Corpse last pick, I’d pick up the Rannet here. It’s not great, but still plenty playable in RB.
Conclusion: Call to Heel is our only real choice.

Marble Chalice
--> Deathgreeter
Swamp
Thorn-Thrash Viashino
Obelisk of Bant
Incurable Ogre
Immortal Coil
Etherium Sculptor

Blecch. I’d probably take the rare here. Go 10 cents!
Conclusion: Immortial Coil

Pack 1 pick 9:
Island
--> Jund Panorama
Ridge Rannet
Jungle Weaver
Necrogenesis
Thorn-Thrash Viashino
Obelisk of Bant

Nice Jungle Weaver. Did I mention the GW deck we could have had yet? Barring that, there’s really nothing in this pack. Necrogenesis is really good against us though, so that’s a fine hatedraft. If we have to play this Jund Panorama, we’re in serious trouble. I don’t think we’re in trouble yet, so let’s take the Necrogenesis.
Conclusion: Necrogenesis.

Pack 1 pick 10:
Dispeller's Capsule
Excommunicate
Call to Heel
Spell Snip
--> Corpse Connoisseur
Forest

Three Esper cards? Well…. Sort of. This pack had a Metallurgeon, an Archdemon, and a Blister Beetle, all of which could have easily been snagged by Esper players. Notice someone took Metallurgeon over Excommunicate: At least one person at this table is a heavy Esper player. We already grabbed one Call to Heel and have no new Synergy. Let’s take Excom or Corpse here.
Conclusion: Do we really want to ditch white? At any rate, the Corpse is good with our Draggers, and white can still be an Esper splash. Corpse it is.

Here’s a recap of the picks we took: Oblivion Ring, Viscera Dragger, Executioner’s Capsule, Viscera Dragger, Grixis Panorama, Tidehollow Strix, Call to Heel, Deathgreeter, Jund Panorama, Corpse Conoisseur. Pretty Loose Esper deck, with 6 card making the deck at this point, + O Ring and a couple weird fixers that doesn’t’ help much.
Not terrible, but I’d rather have this: Oblivion Ring, Excommunicate, Knight of the White Orchid, Resounding Roar, Guardians of Akrasa, Cavern Thoctar, Elvish Visionary, Incurable Ogre, Jungle Weaver, -card instead of Excom-. Not very bomby, but still very open. Very aggressive, and can still go Bant or Naya or straight GW. Looks like 8 cards will definitely make the maindeck.

That’s all I have to say for now. Here’s 5 rules to live by in Shards draft:
1. Stay open. Don’t lock yourself into a shard for anything less than an awesome bomb.
2. If you only play 2 colors, you don’t need fixers.
3. Splashing is better than playing straight 3 colors.
4. Watch your curve. The 3 slot gets crowded fast.
5. Don’t play Obelisks.
