I have created a UG aggro deck and I have a horrid time against merfolk. The matchup is unwinnable excluding when I'm on the play and my opponent doesn't draw any lords. I would like to improve the matchup but the cheap removal is sorely lacking in UG. Here's my list....
// NAME: UG Aggro
// Lands
4 [10E] Treetop Village
8 [SHM] Island (1)
1 [TSB] Pendelhaven
5 [SHM] Forest (1)
4 [10E] Yavimaya Coast
// Creatures
2 [CS] Boreal Druid
4 [SHM] Somnomancer
4 [LRW] Pestermite
4 [PLC] Gossamer Phantasm
4 [SHM] Tattermunge Maniac
4 [10E] Llanowar Elves
4 [FUT] Tarmogoyf
3 [FUT] Venser, Shaper Savant
// Spells
4 [TSP] Squall Line
1 [FUT] Pact of Negation
4 [TSB] Psionic Blast
// Sideboard
SB: 3 [FUT] Pact of Negation
SB: 3 [10E] Pithing Needle
SB: 1 [TSB] Mystic Snake
SB: 4 [CS] Rune Snag
SB: 4 [FUT] Riftsweeper
I decided to make and play this deck because I wanted a simplistic straightforward aggro deck that wouldn't be on anyone's radar. My sideboard is a mess because that is my "Achilles heel" of deckbuilding. I would like advice with card for card exchanges (to maindeck and board) and specific ways my deck could gain an advantage against Merfolk.
Thanks for your time. |

Somnomancer, Gossamer Phantasm, maindeck 4 Squall Line, singleton Pact of Negation, 6 elves and no 3-drops... there are many errors with this deck.
I mean, why do you play those creatures instead of better ones? Why Squall Line and not Cloudthresher? Are you building on a budget?
U/G aggro may work fine. You can pump out early creatures and then defend them with counters, just like Merfolk does. Mystic Snake, Venser and Cryptic Command. The rest early beaters. Remember that Tarmogoyf is not normally an early beater. |

I think you're under-simplifying things. 3 drops don't work well in this deck because of the treetops, and squall line can deal more then 2, unlike thresher. It's either AS GOOD as thresher evoked, or better in that it deals more as a finisher. 2GGGG isn't plausible given the aggro status and the low curve.
Cryptic Command is out of the question, this isn't UB, or UW. UG has really shitty mana fixers.
And please, you're advice is useless as you don't give any option for all those "better creatures" you speak of. Just what the heck is a great 2 drop for UG?
If you have advice I welcome it, but weak inuendos about non-existant "better" options doesn't help in the slightest.
Thanks anyways. |

Please suggest what to take out. Just naming good cards is useless.
Thx anyways. |

If you want to use Squall Line as a finisher mainly, then you need to have more life than your opponent, and that won't happen with shitty creatures like Gossamer Phantasm and Somnomancer. And when you don't have 3-drops in the deck, why do you even bother playing 6 1-drop creatures which give you 3 mana turn 2? It is not like they are useful to you later than that.
You have 16 2/1 creatures, 6 1/1 creatures, 4 2/2 and Tarmogoyf. And no way to make them bigger. How do you plan to outrace red aggro (bigger dudes +more burn), GW aggro (biiig dudes), kithkin (not very big dudes but bigger than yours), GB elves (bigger dudes and removal), Doran (bigger dudes and removal), Faeries (better creatures, more synergy and counters), Reveiblink (you got no disruption), druid combo (same), Merfolk (bigger dudes and counter), RG ramp (huge dudes and mass removal) and so on?
You have no disruption, no removal, little evasion, no permission and weak creatures. This won't do.
My advice is to Keep Tarmogoyf, Pestermite and Venser. Add Birds of Paradise, Mystic Snake, Scryb Ranger, Scion of Oona, Rune Snag, Ancestral Vision, Vendilion Clique or Mistbind Clique perhaps... a lot of good creatures to choose from in those colours - actually two of the best colours in Standard atm. |

I honestly don't see a way in current standard to make a UG aggro deck.
As pointed above, there are many flaws within the deck. One not mentioned so far is the presence of a full squad of Tattermunge Maniacs and only 10 lands to support the drops.
A better approach, in my opinion, would be to make an aggro-control kind of deck. Most probably UG faeries. |

| Once the merfolk are on the board, evacuation is really your only response, so I guess you could board evacuation. I have been experimenting with using ovinize in the board for only one reason: to stop mirrorweave. Its very situation but I guess vs merfolk, that ovinize on the weave's target can buy you enough time to win. |
