Tournament Cost Survey

My friends and I are going to start hosting sanctioned tournaments out here in Muskegon, MI. soon, hopefully. When discussing how much to charge, we came up with a few options.

What would you want for weekly tournaments? Cheaper entries for some easy fun? Or would you rather have it be a little more expensive for more packs?

To give a little more informations on the options:

$5 Dollars, 1 Pack a person, so 8 packs at the min. 8 players, 1st 4 packs, 2nd 2, 3rd & 4th 1 each.

$10, 2 packs, 16 packs min, 8 players, 1st 8, 2nd 5, 3rd 2, 4th 1

$15, 3 packs, 24 pack min, 8 players, 1st 12, 2nd 7, 3rd 3, 4th 2.

$20, 4 packs, 32 packs min, 8players, 1st 16, 2nd 10, 3rd 4, 4th 2.

We decided on 50%, 30%, 13%, and then leftovers to fourth. Each is rounded to the nearest.

I don't really know how it is in other areas, but its usually about $10 bucks out here. I'm not sure what they put in the prize pools either. I just can remember the old days when it was $5 bucks, and it was so much nicer back then. Of course, prizes are down, because of the raise in price since then.

If these people are serious about the game, they aren't going to want to spend 4 hours and 5 dollars for 4 packs. I would spend the extra ten for $36 more worth of prizes.

But if it is all casual and new players, cheaper might be better.

50%, 25%, 12.5%, 12.5% is a better way imo.

I think your standard would be $5 and maybe once a month run a bigger tournament for $15-20. If it's sanctioned, people would gladly waste 3 hours for 3 rounds of a cheap sanctioned tournament (there is no sanctioned tourney in my area and most of the people would be chomping at the bit for one, so i'd assume that would be true most places)

I dont know about everyone else, but for my local tournaments, it is $5 for 2 packs a person, and $10 for a draft with 1 pack per person prize. I know this is amazing prize support, but it does bring people into the store where a lot of people happily buy $100 boxes and $4 packs, not to mention that people like me buy mountains of sleeves too. They make like nothing on the tournys, but a lot on the accessories.

are you planning to do this at a store or anything? or at your house? location also tends to bring in more people (you will get more people if you have it at a local comic book store than your house)

for the first one or two try just 5 dollars, that should get some people to first start comming, and then when you get more people ask them if they want to increase the cost for more prize support

I think some cheaper tournaments would be good because you can give the more experienced players a little practice with some reward and it would let beginners experience tournies with little loss when they are eliminated 2nd round (the first maybe 5 tournies I went to I paid 20 bucks to be eliminated in the 2nd round). Then do a more expensive tourny once a month... or the Saturday after the less expensive tourney.

also, what features would you guys like to see on a local area magic website? This is less important then the main topic, so don't worry too much about it.

Is it just me but you could jsut not guarentee a pack per person. That way although everyoen deosnt get soemthing the prizes ar ehigher for first place and so on

$5 A person is pretty good. They're not worried about spending 3 hours cause what else would they do during the day? Probally they would just go and play for fun.

But if you would want to make more money you should make the tourney $8 and offer 12 packs distirbuted however you want it. You could do $10 but $8 is probally better cause even though its only a $2 difference 8 just sounds better to people then 10.
