First of all, forget about IRC whenever it comes to anything to do with the league. IRC is only the medium that we use to communicate. All the data about tournaments and stuff is in the web server.

irc has nothing to do with the web server :-\

It would be fairly easy to make a script that sends an e-mail to users when a tournament is created in the site's judge admin. There are a couple of major problems in the idea, tho:

maybe making one from the site would be easy, but one from irc would not.
I also agree that it wouldn't be worth it

There's lots of ideas being thrown about using Ajax in The New Site, so that you could automatically get a sound or such to notify when a mini is started or such as long as you have the site open.
The problem with The New Site of course is that it takes tons of work (and therefore tons of money) and as we're a free league... well, let's just say you may volunteer if you want to.

just program ur mirc to play a song when a mini opens up

to make mIRC play a noise ir to a notice is quite easy. You can even go to sounds and change the noise from a beep to any mp3 song you have. HOWEVER: you will have a song play every 30 seconds when a "You have X minutes remaining in the Quarterfinals of..." script goes off. The real difficulty is scripting a script to play your sound when the words "forming" are used in a notice. This would of course be only in a entry banner.

connect the program to the site and it's almost done
U could even have an ML msn messenger account, and once u add it, the ML account sends a msg to everyone who is online whenever a tourney starts, voila done.
Saying this is to difficult is plain bs.
Personally I'm usually surfing and I check the chat rooms once in a while, and I often miss mini's this way. I would really apreciate this possibility. I don't like sitting in the chat room for hours.

I love idiots who go and say "saying that is difficult is bs" but then they don't offer to script it themselves. I'm sure they'd install it if you did all the work.

Connecting a program thro the site to send anyone a msg through msn/aim/yahoo/whatever is something you'd have to take up with Gfo or Koen.

obv ML has to be involved.... how did u figure that one out.
This thing has to be done by/trough the site (admins), or it's 10 times easier.
Again this is not difficult.
Oh and craze, don't call people idiots, really, coming from u, I don't even know weather it's a huge insult or a compliment.

Again, are you offering to script that? To take time out of your life to script that on the site? Can you even? Cause...
A) most of ML's site scripters are rarely on irc more like have the time to do something like it.
B) They've let people help script the site before.

If you claim its soo easy you must be able to do it yourself. Otherwise your an idiot thats talking out of your ass.

Sending an e-mail on every mini is not hard, but its not a good idea either. As mtk said, by the time you get the email, the mini is already filled. It might not be such a bad idea though to send reminder e-mails before larger events such as masters. However, im not certain how useful that would be.

The idea for an IE/Firefox plugin that notifies you whenever a tournament is starting (regardless of what website you are on) has been floating around for a while. However, it is very low on the list of priorities.

As for sending a text message whenever a mini is created, this is probably not that hard to do either. There are many free services to send texts via a web api. However, I do not think this feature would be terribly useful since by the time you get back to your computer after a txt, the mini would be filled anyway, and if you are already at your computer, then you don't need to get sent the msg.

It could be useful to tell you when no-maxes are starting. If you're away from your computer, i.e. playtesting with a friend orwatching a movie on another floor of your house, a tc starts a no-max mini, you want to get in on it, you can, instead of missing it when you're just relaxing in another room. Not to mention how much this benefits the Vintage community. We all know how long it takes for a type one 8-max to fill. You'd have plenty of time to get in.

what your talking about is something alternative to irc. That is both:
A) extremely hard to program
B) extremely inconvenient for just about everyone

People have channels and some even have connections to the current server. Not to mention the current method is very sound and it would be stupid to try changing an already very good method that every free league thus far has used.

See, you must actually know something about something, before suggesting this kind of thing.

And kendiggy, what are you talking about?

that is possably the dumbiest thing i have ever heard craze it would be BRILLANT to have something like that i mean come on u would NEVER have to refresh magic-league.com to see tournys r going down and u dont always have to watch the chatroom to see if a tourny is going on i mean that would be SO cool

the idea to have an msn/aim/yahoo/whatever account ran by ML that sends an instant message to your msn/aim/yahoo/whatever when a mini is started seems like a good idea to me, but then again apparently we are all idiots and "scripting" msn would be next to impossible.....

:/

yet next to impossible. The current chat system is a java application that connects to an irc server. Most of us skip this crappy way and use mIRC. What your suggesting is building an ulterior chat that works with site to send out some kind of...I dunno message, or something so you know when a mini opens up.
There are 3 problems with this:
A) its unnecessary. As given before there are a number of ways to use mIRC to play a sound for you.
B) it would be useless for anything outside of no maxes.
C) It would put a massive inconvenience on anyone like myself and a good other part of the league that uses non-mtg services on the server.

scripting msn wouldn't be next to impossible as its been done thus it exists. And your not an idiot only the jackass that calls the whole process easy yet can't do it himself.
I don't know how the site is currently set up or whats in store for upgraded version but as said a mini indicator is not very high on the priority list.

My suggestion to all of you is to download mirc at http://www.mirc.com/
play around with it and connect to #magic-league. This guide will help: http://www.magic-league.com/guide/mirc.php

If you get a handle on it, try going to http://www.hawkee.com/ and learning to script. You can learn to set a noise to go off whenever a notice in a channel your in says the word "forming" And bam you have a mini indicator.
