What determines the order in which two cards that both activate "during your upkeep", I.I. bottomless pit and the rack.

Here's how it works with multiple triggered abilities.

1.) Active player's triggered abilities stack first in the order of their choosing

2.) Non-active player triggered abilities stack in the order of their choosing

Since non-active player's triggered abilities were stacked last, their abilities will resolve in the reversed order they were stacked (remember, first in, last out or last in, first out), then active player's triggered abilities resolve in reverse order they were stacked.

So if you have both Bottomless Pit and The Rack in play, the ideal order would be to stack The Rack first then Bottomless Pit. That way, Bottomless Pit resolves first, making The Rack more potent.

Also note that all cards triggering "during your upkeep" have recieved the errata to read "At the beginning of your upkeep...". This doesn't change anything funtionally.

You can find the Oracle text (the official errataed text of how the card should be played) by searching for the card on Gatherer, you'll find entries like these: The Rack and Bottomless Pit. The Oracle text is the text on the right. You can pretty much ignore what the card says, and should treat it like it has the text on the right instead.

At the time (with the sixth edition overhaul) it was a very big change and did (at the time) change the functionality completely.
