Usually in a tournament, if a player asks a judge "Can I target Duress with Misdirection?" the judge should just answer "yes". Unless the question was "can I redirect the duress on my opponent casting misdirection", in which case would be "no". Judges shouldn't give tactical suggestions, just answer questions. For example, if you already cast Misdirection on duress, the judge can explain it can't change target, but Misdirection remains on the stack (and it's not taken back to hand), since that's not an illegal play.

so i was right in the first place, saying that willbender is allowed to morph up and target the castigate as a legal target, but the ability counters upon resolution (fizzles) due to the fact that the target does not change

I am not sure if the ability fizzles (cannot resolve on resoltion) but indeed, the ability does nothing effectively.

The ability doesnīt fizzle at all. As Castigate is a legal target, Willbender ability tries to change the target. Seeing there are no more legal targets to choose from, and according to rule 415.7a, the ability resolves keeping the same target.

God, how many times have I said target? Razz

BTW IanRobbins, thereīs no need to talk that way to TD. He was wrong and thatīs all, letīs try not to turn this topic into a flaming nest.

You're right about this not becoming a flame fest, dragonprince, but some people like to brag too much about being a judge and not worrying about how they interact with people. If you make a ruling don't talk to people like they're stupid. Just make the ruling and if later on you find out that it was incorrect; just go back appologize and chalk it up to a learning experience.
Thank you and good night.
