|
|
Hi. Ive a Q that needs to be answered in a hurry, so thanks to all in advance.
Here it is:
I say that i can retrieve from graveyard to my hand my eternal dragon at the end of my draw step, because I argue that the draw step is included in the upkeep.
{3}{W}{W}: Return Eternal Dragon from your graveyard to your hand. Play this ability only during your upkeep.
On the other hand my friend says that move is illegal, because the draw step is not included in upkeep.
Who´s right ? Please give me good explanation, using if possible comprehensive rules, or something "official" .
Thanks for your help. Bye |

upkeep
draw phase
main phase 1
battle (and everything that goes with it)
main phase 2
end of turn (and everything that goes with it) |

| All you have to do is pop open apprentice and look at the icons across the top of the screen. the only thing that's missing is the post-combat main phase, but you can clearly see that your draw step comes AFTER your upkeep phase. |

| The beginning phase is broken down to three steps, untap, upkeep, and draw. So you can only bring back dragon during the upkeep step, even though it is part of the whole phase it specifies upkeep. And your upkeep ends once you draw a card for the turn. |

The thing I dont undertand about it is :
Was this move ever legal?
What I mean is, Has the "draw Step" been part of the upkeep ever? or in recent changes of rulings, because ive seen that move in local tournaments, and lots of people told me that was legal.
Im sorry if this discussion is a bit boring. |

| it might be that you don't take manaburn between steps but only between phases so you can float mana to draw step if you're tapped down during upkeep. |

there are 5 phases
beginning
main1
combat
main2
end
3 of these phases also included steps:
beginning has 3 of these:
untap step
upkeep step
draw step
combat has 5 of these
beginning of combat
declare attackers step
declare blockers step
combat damage step
end of combat step
and finally, the end phase has another 2 steps:
end of turn step
discard/cleanup step
Since in your draw step, the upkeep step is already over/has already ended, you cannot return eternal dragon after you've drawn the card in draw step |

Regarding soulstice post, you are right.
Taking Braid of Fire as example, you can pay the upkeep cost and use the mana in your poll on your draw step, after you have drew your card. If you don't, as beginning phase ends, you will lose 1 life for each mana you didn't use, called as mana burn. |
