If my opponent forces me to discard a lightning bolt, can I play it as a respons before it gets discarded?

u can cast the lightning bolt as a response to the spell while its still on the stack, one the spell resolves you can't do jack abot it....except for madness.....a.k.a fiery temper which turns into a lightning bolt WHEN you have to discard it...so unless the card has madness i suggest you cast that bolt but only if the card ur holding is an instant , if it isnt then your out of luck...

No you can't. You can only play it in response to his discard spell but once he actually chooses the card you can't do anything.
