stranger also finished high again with Wumpus, and I took second with a combo that did lifegain swings almost as good as Helix.
Round 15 is a format suggested by Blake_C. Your deck MUST contain 2 of the same card, and one different card.
Banned list:
Unglued/Unhinged
Black Lotus
Mesmeric Fiend
Nezumi Shortfang
Strip Mine
Wasteland
Ghost Quarter
The Rack
Meddling Mage
Form of the Dragon
| Quote: | What is 3cb?
3-Card Blind (3CB) is a very unique game. The rules are as follows
Your deck is composed of 3 cards, all of which start in your hand.
You have no library (technically, the library exists, but starts at 0 cards) and no sideboard (Wishes fetch nothing).
Random effects always go in your opponent's favour.
You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.
You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
You will play each opponent twice, once going first, once going second.
For each win, you score 3.
For each draw, you score 1.
For each loss, you get nothing.
Other than the aforementioned, EVERYTHING IS HANDLED EXACTLY LIKE A REAL GAME OF MAGIC! |
To make an entry, PM your deck to me (GRAH) in the following format:
Subject: 3cb Tournament Entry or 3cb Tournament Revision
Deck Name
Card #1
Card #2
Card #3
(For those who don't know, you don't actually play, you just send the decks and, because of the way the rules work, it's easy for me to compute results.) |

I don't like this week's format much simply because it is too restrictive. You have to play either a single win condition with 2 of the same mana source to cast it or 2 of the same win conditions that are able to be cast by a single mana source. There is basically no possible way to include any card that does not function as a win condition in some way, and that severely limits the viable decks available.
In my opinion, there are 2 important things to consider when creating a 3cb format:
1. Is there a large enough pool of viable decks?
2. Do the restrictions force the players to consider new cards/decks that haven't previously seen play?
You want to seek a balance between these two considerations. You want to restrict the card choices enough to force people to get creative (rather than being able to just copy the best decks), but not so much that the list of viable decks is too short.
Anyway, I don't have a specific format to suggest at this time, but I will be working on coming up with some to submit to GRAH. BTW, I'd like to thank GRAH and anyone else who has helped out (computing results, suggesting formats, etc.) for running these rounds of 3CB. I had never heard of it before a few weeks ago, and I've found it is very addicting and fun. I look forward to future weeks.
**EDIT: This week's format might not be as restricting as I made it out to be.. I've found a few different decks that I like. END EDIT**

Legalize Black Lotus.
There, I said it. It may sound a little crazy, but I think it would really increase the options everyone has to work with. And we could just re-ban it whenever we didn't feel like using it.
Some of the advantages, IMO:
Spells ranging from 3cc up through 6cc become much easier to incorporate into decks. For example:
3cc: Black Lotus
4cc: Black Lotus + land
5cc: Black Lotus + City of Traitors
6cc: 2x Black Lotus
Of course these 4, 5 and 6cc spells are going to be stronger, but they have a built-in disadvantage in that it requires 2 cards to get them into play. Thus, they have to win the game on their own, and they have no protection in the form of disruption or a 2nd win condition.
Finally, there are some formats in 3CB that don't have the card pool needed to create an interesting environment. If you were to suddenly include Black Lotus in these environments, the number of usable cards would often more than double. For example, 3CB using T2 sets only suffers from a lack of castable cards, but if the format were changed to T2 + Black Lotus then the format might be a lot of fun. You could do this with any number of odd formats that suffer due to a lack of castable cards. |

TMD has just started a few Lotus rounds. Depending on how it ends up (I took 2nd in the first one with Leyline Blue, Karakas, Tethered Griffin), I'll see about doing them here.
By the way, stranger, this round was suggested by someone else. If you have any good format ideas, feel free to send them this way. |
