Dont know if it exists already, but here is a thought.
Give each player X turns, X would be defined in the format name: IM30, IM20 etc etc.
If a player would lose before the X turns are over, he/she just plain and simple loses the game. If no player lost after both players have had X turns, the player with the best board would win.
The last part seems tricky, why not just use life?
Anyway, if there is some positive respons on the idea, there is always a way to define specific rules. Like what to do when someone get an extra turn? How to keep track of those and do they count as one of the X.
In my opinion, this would prevent stalling cause you always get X turns to win.
Thoughts? |

how can u tell who has the best board?
and thats not fair; what if one person has a worse board but more good cards left in his deck? or a top in play? |

| In magic-league that would transulate to 20 turns and then the guy whos better mates with the judges wins. |

| You know, not all judges are friends. There are a few of us that don't like eachother at all. |

The way to determine the "boardvalue" can be fixed in the rules and can be tweaked by experience.
Obv. there is no way to tell for sure if a board is the winner, just consider topdecking a WoG for instance in the what would have been the next turn.
But a player who would focus simply on lifegain to be the player with the most life after 20 turns should not just be declared winner either.
Still, stalling would be useless in such a format. |

To prevent stalling you gotta do as they do in chess (think they do it on modo also). Each player gets a certain amount of time. The clock goes when that player thinks (when it's ur turn in chess, or when u have priority in magic). If you don't have any time left, u loose.
Impossible to do playing magic on appr or rl though. As priority passes all the time. But there's no point giving each a player a certain amount of turns. You just stall when you have few turns left and the better board possition. |

| extra turn should be just that extra turn. then you gotta teach the players how to make sure 1st turn starts first player etc. board position... that is def a tricky one. should we count cards in hand? next draws? i say no. if after 20 turns game is not over then it stops. nothing will happen after that turn. nothing. thats the point of the format. so maybe just look at board only and figure out who would win that way... what if there is a stall on the board? neither player can do anything. i still think life would work for this format. a deck with nothing but life gain will still get its ass beat by a good deck. even after 20 turns. what is it actually was a lifegain deck. with test of endurance? then best board position would go to the player with 30 trillion life. :/ and who decides best board position? that person would ALWAYS have to be on. and as for experience. ive been playing sence ice age. others haven't. so not it comes to judgement. and there are people I dont trust. you dont need to be a good experienced player to be a judge. if its a rated match it has to be a judge that rules. so the life rule is concrete. no judgement required. if the goal is to be in a winning position or win by turn 20 or 30 then thats the goal. play to win, gain life on your 19th turn to win. i say life would be a better way to figure it out over someones judgement. |

This is the most retarded idea ever sorry...
OK first this wastes massive amounts of time, 20 extra turns? You are smoking crack. Second there aren't enough judges in the world to sit and debate who has the better board position at the end of every match. Third this is so debatable many times and it would cause a million fights. I've had games end on time where both players had a Debtor's Knell in play with multiple dragon legends and Loxodon Hierachs in play, so what's the tie breaker? Who the judges like better. What about games where you have 2 4/4 beaters in play but your at 2 life and all they need to do is rip a burn spell to win in the next 3 turns... |

I'll make sure G.O. has that feature, it already has "time left in match" for tournament play (what you use !time for @irc)
Anyway, I guess the board position thing is crap, lol (yes, i was smoking weed at the time of coming up with the idea)
Maybe the chess thing will work...
Thx for the non-flame responses |

this is not something for the end of a round where its not finished.
this is a FORMAT. like highlander is a format. but instead of changing card selection it changes time. please read next time. and it actually does sound like a good idea. |

| So instead of going for the win almost every game basically ends in a draw and the judges decide who wins on board position. Yeah I take back what I said about this being retarded, repackage it, and send it right back. This seems like a very unfun "other" format for everyone involved. |

Well, for one thing, if this "format" ever gets used, no one is holding a gun to your head
Second, if you can't win in 20-25 turns, you probably need to change the deck a bit?
Main advantage is this shown in this example:
Take a 50 minute match. It's 1-1 with 2 minutes left and you are at 12 life, your opp at 4. Your opp. knows he/she can't get you down to 0 life and also knows you can do 1 or 2 damage each turn. It's turn 13 and the stalling begins.
Now, in the IM format, stalling would not get him anywhere, cause he/she knows you still get 7 turns so there probably will be a "gg" + concede instead.
P.s. You can just try the format and see how much % of the games with 20-25 turns end in "boardvalue checks". |
