How does thisc card work:

1)Can you target 5 creatures/players and assign damage on resolution

OR

2)Can you only target one or two creatures/players and it does 2 damage to the one or 1 damagage to each of the two.

...
I had multiple people rule the 2nd one (I had thought first) in the trial and I don't dispute the ruling; I just really want to understand why it works that way. Why can't you target 5 creatures and assign damage 0-0-0-0-2 on resolution?

Thanks!

EDIT:
Draconis explained it to me, is this why?
[01:21] <Draconis> cuz has to deal dmg to each target
[01:21] <Draconis> in order to taret it
[01:22] <Senadai> oh. so it has to have the intent of dealing damage to a creature in order to target it?
[01:22] <Draconis> yes
[01:23] <Draconis> intent was a good word

cause you assign the damage when you choose the target, not after the spell resolutes. its like saying i play blaze, i wont determain x until it resolves. nope

its so easy
electrolyze has to damage to deal
so he can:
a) deal 2 damage to a single creature
b) deal 1 damage to 2 creatures
c) deal 2 damge to a single player
d) deal 1 damage to 2 different players
e) deal 1 damge to a single creature and 1 damage to a single player

and no matter which option u choose u draw a single card

I'm pretty sure the damage must be assigned upon playing the spell and because 0 damage is not damage, such a target would not be a legal target. For example, you can not target a sakura tribe elder and a player then choose to do 2 damage to the player if they sac the elder.

I am less sure about this, but I believe assigning damage and choosing target's are the only decisions that need to be made upon something going on the stack. If there are other things, I would like to know.

I'm not 100% of what you're going for, your wording inst exatly clear. However, X is determained as the spell is played, not after. The game not only requires such a number but its also in place for such cards that couter said converted mana costs of more or less than a certain number.

Anyways...if thats what you WERE saying...good on you and ignore me. Otherwise...now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

you choose targets, as well as where the damage is going to be dealt as you cast the spell, you can have a maximum of 2 targets and a minimum of 1 target.

No CharToFace, you cant. In you're haste to 'read the card' I think you forgot a little tool thats comonly available called the Gatherer. If you dont know already, this pretty tool has all the errata and a good healthy dose of rule notes for one such as yourself to look at before makeing silly comments.

And I quote, "Feb 1, 2006 - "Any number" can be only 1 or 2. It can't be 0 because you can't distribute 2 damage among 0 targets. It can't be 3 or more because there are only 2 points of damage to distribute."

Problem solved? Look it up yourself!
