no, a spell will say target if it is targetting. one noteworthy exception to this might be aura's which do target upon casting.

The word "target" itself must be a part of the text in order to target. GLobal effects such as Wrath of God and Oblivion Stone kill all protection from white and untargetable creatures.

yeah, they've beat it to death, but it's a global effect, so "can't be target" doesn't save em. Sorry.

what about pro-red creatures and pyroclasm... i.e. does pyroclasm kill a silver knight or a paladin en-vec?

No, pyroclasm doesn't kill pro-red creatures. Part of protection is "Prevent all damage that would be dealt to this permanent by a source of the color/type it has protection from"

Protecrtion DOES NOT prevent damage, there is a suble difference in protection. It reduces damage dealt by the source to zero. This is so that you cannot say something triggers from a prevention of damage (if there is a card that tiggers off that).

Protection used to specifically refer to reducing the damage to zero, but that was an older edition of the rules. From the current comp rules on protection:

502.7e Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent that has protection is prevented.

However, damage prevented still doesn't trigger events related to dealing damage (like Spirit Link or Umezawa's Jitte) because the event that would set off the trigger has been prevented (by replacement effect) from happening. You'll be familiar with the way Dredge replaces a drawn card, thus preventing the draw from occuring.
