Take an existing mechanic, that could appear in a core set, like scry, exalted or bloodthirst did and show a card that could see print in that very core set.

Judging will happen as usual without points but rather constructive thoughts, that exceed "great card" or "like it" and aproximitly 20 entries are reached.

Edit: Focus of the judging will be the choice of the mechanic, and the fitting of the card into a coreset. Flavor and limited balance are not as important but could be the decider between cards.

((I've decided to go more into the route that Bloodthirst and Exalted took; the flavor takes a new perspective, and typically gets a slice of the color pie it didn't have before, if applicable.

I've chosen Traps, and made them black and blue in flavor. The flavor is that these Traps represent the preparation for various tactics; the things these are prepared for are related to the trigger for the Trap. I've made a black one for this challenge, as a temporary replacement for Murder/Doom Blade.))

Executioner's Trap -- 2BB

Instant - Trap -- Common

If a nonblack creature entered the battlefield this turn, you may pay 1B rather than pay Executioner's Trap's mana cost.

Destroy target creature.

I would just like to point out the gunsanddope's entry is severely OP.

my entry

Fill with Heroism 1W

Instant (Uncommon)

Target creature gets +2/+2 and lifelink until end of turn.

Landfall - If you had a land enter the battlefield under your control this turn, that creature gets +2/+2, lifelink, and double strike until end of turn instead.

Theshold is one of my favorites mechanics ever, the simpler most elegant way to despict transformation, I would put it mainly on green and black cards, an example for a core set:

Wild Wolf 1G

Creature - Wolf

Discard a card from your hand: Regenerate Wild Wolf

Threshold - Wild Wolf gets +2/+2

2/1
