So, I'm in Hong Kong for the summer. Sadly I do not know anyone here. Fortunately, I know an excellent way to meet people: FNM BAYBEE!!!!
However, I left all my cards in Pittsburgh (where I go to school). Also, I am but a lowly intern, so my monetary constraints are... very constraining. So, I need some hella cheap deck to bring with me so I won't be an awkward penguin.
With M13 rounding around, normally I'd wait around to see what's legal and what's not before making a deck, but:
A: If good stuff comes out I can just add it to my deck later.
B: There's not a lot of important stuff in the grey area of "will it or will it not be reprinted?" to consider.
C: I'm impatient as hell.
So, if anyone has any deck ideas for something that'll be standard legal when M13 rolls around, is cheap (like $30-$40 cheap), and obviously preferably good, please shoot them at me! Right now I'm playing around with a pretty inexpensive WR Kuldotha build. I was gonna make BW tokens, then I found out that Lingering Souls costs $3 and the only reliable supplier of MTG cards to Hong Kong was out of stock of them anyways (www.mtgmintcard.com)
Thanks community!

| Mono blue delver is pretty cheap and should allow you to make an impression with the right people. |

A relatively competitive deck will run you at least $200 USD. Even a budget mono-blue delver (if you deduct snapcasters and/or phantasmal images) will run just over $100 USD. So I guess it depends on what you consider cheap given your current situation.
If those prices are a bit out of range, I'd take Flippi's advice and work with the foundation of an event deck.
PS: Always nice to see another magic player from my home town. Good luck! |

Hmmmm, I really like the Gobbo deck idea, but I'm gonna wait till they confirm on reprinting Goblin Chieftain (they definitely dont seem to be planning on reprinting Goblin Grenade). If they do though, that seems really sexy, especially with Krenko's command and Krenko himself coming up soon (I think w/o Chieftain, Krenko is a bit slow for a Goblin deck).
Here's the WR Kuldotha deck I've been working on. Other things im considering so far are WG aggro (seeing as Rancor is making a comeback), Mono-Blue Delver, UG Delver, White Weenies, and Grand Architect.
// Lands
10 [AVR] Mountain (2)
9 [AVR] Plains (2)
2 [ISD] Clifftop Retreat
// Creatures
3 [M12] Goblin Arsonist
4 [MBS] Accorder Paladin
4 [AVR] Kruin Striker
4 [NPH] Porcelain Legionnaire
// Spells
4 [MBS] Flayer Husk
4 [SOM] Origin Spellbomb
4 [SOM] Kuldotha Rebirth
4 [AVR] Pillar of Flame
4 [DKA] Gather the Townsfolk
1 [M12] Incinerate
3 [ISD] Rally the Peasants |

| To bad your store doesn't do draft instead., since your main goal is to meet new people. Would be cheaper in the long run if your half way decent. I'm sure you can find a shop in Hong Kong that does. |

Oh man, was gonna go to a draft today, but typhoon warning came out
I guess with 1 more week or so before full preview may as well wait for M13 to put my brewing cap on. |

There is articals for Building on a budget. Some are more expensive then others but: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Archive.aspx?tag=Building on a Budget&description=Building on a Budget
I personally have built the red deck for MTGO since i just started online play. And the black zombie pod is a really good one too if you have the cash for it. I recommend it over the red deck. I can say the red deck does kick ass. Ive beaten u/b zombies like it wasnt a problem, the U/w delver match up isnt so bad....its still bad cause your budget. |

| I've been a Building on a Budget reader for a few years now. While he's a great dude and all, and his deck ideas are awesome, a lot of his decks can quickly rack up $70 if you buy them in print, which is what I plan on doing. I've definitely looked at some of his stuff, and Big Red was actually one of the decks I was considering lol. |

| Actually, a lot of his earlier decks are a lot more reasonable pricewise. Time to take a second look at the archvies! |

So TIL that standard is going to be SOM-M12-INN-M13, not SOM-INN-M13 like I thought.
That changes some stuff lol. |
