If you can't understand the english in a newspaper article from the Washington Post, you are not at "simple english" level, but significantly lower down the literacy scale.

Yes, the American Senate is very powerful, yet they are under alot of scrutiny by the media because alot of scandal arises from their ranks.
Gumonshoe, all this article is is a random news report from a couple years ago about an investigation into where the hell all that money was going to. See, companies will donate money to political candidatesand/or politicians' charities if those persons views and interests match the views and interests of the donating company. Since the Senate is who makes the laws, lots of money gets poured into the senate's coffers in hopes of laws being passed or abolished in favor of the the source of the money. Hence Nico's title "The American Senate; the best government money can buy?"
The problem with this is politicians don't have their own opinions. Their opinions are based on the views of whoever gives them the most money. This leads to much corruption and scandals and news reports such as this one.
What I forgot to mention is that there are limits on how much money can be donated, so people find loopholes and will donate the maximum amount several times rather than all at once, each donation has it's own label and "purpose" Apparently these people screwed up and are what we at m-L call noobs and caught the attention of the rivals that were mentioned, the rivals being the more powerful party, and the rivals "called the cops" so to speak because they didn't like the fact that they had new competition.

Isn't it funny how the word 'politics' is made up of the words 'poli' meaning 'many' in Latin, and 'tics' as in 'bloodsucking creatures??

No.

First, poly is from a Greek root.

Second, tics are muscle spasms, not insects.

Third, politics comes from the Greek word politiko (polis, city, made into a related noun, politiko, citizen).

And fourth, your post was not funny enough to take as a joke.

I thought it was pretty funny. Like I wasn't rolling on the floor laughing, but it was pretty clever.
And TICKS are tiny little blood-sucking insects that hang off of brances and leaves and latch on to animals that brush up against them afterwards feeding from the blood of it's host and swelling up to the size of a grape. Ticks are known to spread lyme disease which can be treated with simple penicillin. If you are bitten by a tick, you should squeeze the base of the bite, not the bug, and the tick will let go. Then preserve it in an alcohol solution and bring it to your doctor.
The Tick was also a funny animated television show in the nineties.
Anyways, back to the topic at hand...
Politicians are blood-sucking whores.

I do not consider it very funny when there is no truth to the wit.

Remarking "if pro is the opposite of con, then is progress the opposite of congress" is funny because pro and con are truly opposite and progress/congress is obviously the play of the joke. However, it is even better because there is a separate level to the juxtaposition in that congress is also a verb meaning to meet and thus you arrive at an absurdity of language.

Just because it isn't true/exact doesn't mean it isn't funny.
