Alphabet Magic Rules

Channel Announcement:

Alphabet Magic - X, Y and Z ( 8,1Rules and Banlist @ www.magic-league.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14986 1,4) [WIN THE MINI, CHANGE A LETTER!]

Gatherer Search Link:

To search for cards with names beginning with the letter "X", use the link below. To search for cards with other names, replace the letter "X" with the letter you need:

Deck Construction:

    * Chosen Letters -- Three letters are chosen before the start of the tournament ("Chosen Letters"). The winner of the tournament may either: (i) change one letter to another letter of his or her choice; or (ii) change all three letters to letters chosen at random by the TC.

    * Card Names -- Decks may only contain cards whose English name begins with a Chosen Letter. "AEther" is assumed to begin with the letter "A". (E.g. Tarmogoyf can only be played if "T" is a Chosen Letter.)

    * Card Pool -- Cards may be used from all black- and white-bordered Magic card sets, any edition of the core set and all special sets, supplements, and promotional printings released by Wizards of the Coast (i.e. Vintage/Legacy cardpool.).

    * Deck Size -- Decks must contain at least 60 cards. Decks may contain a sideboard of exactly 0 or 15 cards.

    * Basic Land and Snow Land -- Basic Land card and Snow-Covered Basic Land cards may be used no matter what the Chosen Letters are for the tournament. (E.g. Snow-Covered Plains may be used in any tournament.)

    * Non-Basic Land -- Mon-basic land cards can only be used if the cardname of the non-basic land begins with a Chosen Letter (E.g. Ghost Quarter can only be used if "G" is a Chosen Letter.)

    * Split Cards -- Split cards cannot be used unless the name of each half of a split card starts with a Chosen Letter. (E.g. Dead//Gone can only be used if both "D" and "G" are Chosen Letters.)

    * Flip Cards and Transform Cards -- These cards may only be used if the name of the unflipped or untransformed side of the card begins with a Chosen Letter. (E.g. Reckless Waif // Merciless Predator may only be used if "R" is a Chosen Letter.)

3 is actually fine most of the time...

Formats ive played in so far:

MWS - Mono Blue Merfolk and Survival Variants (at the time it was still legal).
Survival running Misty Rainforest, Windswept Heath, Savannah, Stomping Ground, Murmuring Bosk and Wasteland and then Wild Nacatl, Stoneforge Mystic, Mother of Runes and some other nice creatures.
Merfolk just the usual. Merrow Reejerey, Merfolk Sovereign, Silvergill Adept, Wake Trasher, Mana Leak...

LFT - A ton of Loam variants with Tarmogoyfs, Terravores and Cycle Lands. Seen some control decks, but i forgot how exactly the were built (except for running Force of Will of course)

Are the letters random or just chosen semi randomly by whoever starts the tournament? Q, X, Z could be bad times.

The letters are chosen by whoever starts the tournament. That person could chose to pick them randomly.

I totally disagree with this. So that means one person can add a broken combo to it's deck, say Painter's Servant and Grindstone, then open the mini, and the players who want to enter the mini have to be searching for other kinds of strategies, since they might not discover that one before the tournament closes, while the judge, happy with his premeditated choice, wins the mini with a hand tied on his back. Sorry, I love magic-league, but from experience, even judges are bitches enough to do something like this.

Thanks, but I think I'll pass... Laughing

You guys need to put up a set announcement for each week for what the letters will be. I made two different decks for two letter combos, and both trials filled/closed before I could sign up.

It saddens me to see you cast such imputations on my reputation. Sad

As an aside, I am currently running this, Winner picks one of the three letters to change for another. We'll see how it works out.

This format is designed as a deckbuilding challenge. The letters are posted when the mini opens so no one has the chance to prepare in advance.

I had less than 20 minutes to build a deck that I can never use again. That's just ridiculous.

just a single letter would be cool. Really hard, but will people think think think, and will force lots of suboptimal cards to be played... Very Happy

Except G, E, and M, which will be tribalmonotony...

Which is why I only change one letter per mini to ensure that your work is not completely in vain. In any event, all time spent playing Magic is wasted anyway. Smile

I tried that the first time but the card pool is too small so most decks end up being the same (no diversity is bad) and underpowered (weak is unfun).

I think three letters seems to be about the right number.

Farseer: I never said you where one of those judges. In fact, I've been out of magic-league for some time now, so I can't really make any judgments about you.

But even you, a judge, should know better than me that there are "not very good" judges around here, hence my disapproval for your initial method. Mr. Green

Good point, Farseer...

Smile

By the way, I really support (even if often I dont have the time to play) this kind of formats. These are the possibilities virtual, free mTg gives over its commercial counterpart. I really like when m-l explores that instead of just "real" formats.

Hi there,

These "other" minis usually have a 60 minutes deckbuilding entries. Everyone plays with the same time to deckbuild, unless you are late and then you have less time to do so. But the initial conditions are the same for everyone.

For the record, I'll write down how these minis are going (perhaps this should go to the first post?)

Mini #1 MVP

Players: 11
Winner: Djinn
Record: 3-0 (2-1) (2-0) (2-0)

Mini #2 MPG

Players: 9
Winner: Djinn
Record: 3-0 (2-0) (2-0) (2-0)
Deck: Mono Blue Combos [(Painter's Servant + Grindstone) & (Mana Severance + Goblin Charbelcher)]

Mini #3 (letters still to decide)
