For the past week I've been testing a UG midrange deck. I would play a few games, make some changes, rinse and repeat.

The initial deck had 4 BoP's and 4 Nobles to power out a Jace or a Lorescale Coatl Turn 2, then protect it with Vines of Vastwood and/or Spell Pierce. I would finish the job with either Overrun or Garruk. It was decent, but very light on removal (some mind Controls) and what it really needed was more cheap strong creatures.

I decided to splash R and B. Black was for Putrid Leech. I figured I could easily add 4 Ancient Ziggurets and 4 Verdant Catacombs which in conjunction with the birds would make turn 2 Leeches pretty easy. I then got greedy and added R for Bloodbraid Elf, and then added Thraximunder for a late game finisher.

Terramorphic Expanse just seemed to fit the deck perfectly so I added 4. Once I realized I had 16 fetches, I figured Lotus Cobra would be great for abusing the fetches AND colour fixing.

I cut the Jaces because I need a big blocker, and given my deck likes to produce mana, Sphinx of Lost Truths just makes a lot more sense than Jace. Sure, I could use both, but my early turns are pretty cluttered. Sphinx works nicely with the Lorescale.

By this point Grim discovery just seems like an auto include with all the fetches.

Astute readers may have noticed the potential problem with this deck. 16 fetches, 4 Ancient Ziggurats and Grim discovery? Exactly how many basic lands am I supposed to play here? I decided to just play a fucking lot. 24 actually. As it stands, my deck is now 103 cards. Great against mill decks, but I think it could use some trimming. Any advice is welcome.

first...decide what you really want your deck to do. Once you get that figured out you can decide what to cut from there.

Personally Id do something like this list.

// Lands 24
4 [ZEN] Misty Rainforest
6 [ZEN] Forest (3)
6 [ZEN] Island (1)
4 [ZEN] Verdant Catacombs
4 [ZEN] Swamp (2)

// Creatures
4 [CFX] Noble Hierarch
4 [M10] Birds of Paradise
4 [ARB] Lorescale Coatl
4 [ZEN] Rampaging Baloths
2 [ZEN] Ob Nixilis, the Fallen
4 [ZEN] Lotus Cobra
4 [M10] Acidic Slime
3 [ZEN] Vampire Nighthawk

// Spells

4 [ZEN] Vines of Vastwood
3 [M10] Garruk Wildspeaker

// Sideboard
SB: 4 [M10] Mind Control
SB: 2 [M10] Wall of Frost
SB: 3 [ALA] Naturalize
SB: 1 [ALA] Mycoloth
SB: 2 [CFX] Telemin Performance
SB: 1 [M10] Pithing Needle
SB: 1 [ALA] Relic of Progenitus
SB: 1 [CFX] Zombie Outlander

cut red entirely and splash black.

Nothing is great against mill decks they can mill just about anything. Now lets go over the main build, starting with lands. Your deck is 4 colors, and your packing a whole lot of creatures, and your packing lots of spells. You can't pack lots of high cost spells if you run Ziggurats. As for creature removal you would either have run some doom blades, cancels or nothing at all. Just pump and block. I do see a lot of green, blue and black. I'm guessing that is your color. Assuming you've seen the awsome powers of the elite Jund stomping scute mob... Rolling Eyes

// Lands 24 (Very good manabase here)
4 [ZEN] Misty Rainforest
6 [ZEN] Forest (3)
6 [ZEN] Island (1)
4 [ZEN] Verdant Catacombs
4 [ZEN] Swamp (2)

// Creatures
4 [CFX] Noble Hierarch
4 [M10] Birds of Paradise
3 [ZEN] Rampaging Baloths
2 [ZEN] Ob Nixilis, the Fallen
4 [ZEN] Lotus Cobra
4 [CFX] Putrid Leech
3 [ZEN] Vampire Nighthawk

// Spells

4 [ZEN] Vines of Vastwood
4 [M10] Garruk Wildspeaker
4 [ZEN] Spell pierce "since you like em"

Land should be 24 lands and be based around the cards you want to use most. To me this seems like a solid aggro control deck. You might in time want to add more counters to stabilize better. I think you should give Cancel a shot too. Oh and lose the red obviously. Then again if you were serious about it, add ramp, for the Baloths, and use those massive amounts of tokens to win, might even test out rite of replications with that. Maybe you could put 4 Time Warp in...

What I don't understand is how the last two posts talk about not having enough removal, and yet you're not playing pulse.
If you have black and green in your deck, you should have maelstrom pulse; that simple.

If I were to make a suggestion it would look a bit more like this:

// Lands
4 [ZEN] Misty Rainforest
6 [ZEN] Forest (3)
6 [ZEN] Island (1)
4 [ZEN] Verdant Catacombs
4 [ZEN] Swamp (2)

// Creatures
4 [M10] Birds of Paradise
4 [ARB] Lorescale Coatl
4 [ZEN] Rampaging Baloths
2 [ZEN] Ob Nixilis, the Fallen
4 [ZEN] Lotus Cobra
4 [M10] Acidic Slime
2 [ZEN] Sphinx of Lost Truth

// Spells

4 [ZEN] Vines of Vastwood
3 [M10] Garruk Wildspeaker
4 [ARB] Maelstrom Pulse
1 [ZEN] Spell Pierce

// Sideboard
SB: 4 [M10] Mind Control
SB: 4 [ZEN] Cancel
SB: 3 [ALA] Naturalize
SB: 2 [ALA] Relic of Progenitus
SB: 2 [CFX] Zombie Outlander

Cut from main was the 3 Vampire Nighthawk and 4 Noble Hierarch.
I think the Nighthawks are great, but not even remotely necessary.
And Noble Hierarch would be an auto-in if it could produce black, but it can't unfortunately.
Added was 4 Maelstrom Pulse for some easy removal, along with 2 Sphinx of Lost Truth to power the Coatl and 1 Spell Pierce for random tech.
