Maybe a silly question, but if a card has "cant be the target of spells or abilities," for example troll ascetic, can it be countered?
On the one hand, it's being targeted, but on the other hand, should that matter if the card itself hasnt yet resolved? |

Thats maybe a bit confusing.
As long as a creature isn't in Play its a (Creature)Spell, and Shroud only matters if the Creaturespell gets played in therefore is in Play as a Creature. |

| Another point to add, creatures that can't be countered, heck, any card in general that can't be countered, will have the line of text "Card name" can't be countered by spells or abilities. |

Yes it can be countered.
On the one hand, it's being targeted, but on the other hand, should that matter if the card itself hasnt yet resolved?
Yes it matters. He has to decide before it resolves wether he wants to counter or not. We say that a spell is on the stack when it is cast and he has to make a decision to counter or not before it leaves the stack (the spell leaves the stack when it resolves).
The ability "cant be the target of spells or abilities" is only applied once the spell has resolved. |

I think that all that you have to know about that was already said...
Just one more detail about lands, and resuming all that was saying here:
A spell is a card on the stack, and ONLY on the stack. In
other words, a card becomes a spell as you cast it, and stops being one when it resolves. Note that when playing a land, it doesn't go onto the stack; lands can't ever become spells.
That's why you cannot counter a land...  |
