Wow, those are pretty bad vampire decks. I regret not waking up at 7am to play in this thing now.
EDIT: I'm sorry, I meant to say all the decks are pretty awful. Rampaging Baloths? Seriously?
I guess this is what happens when you start the master too early in the morning. |

TD: I seriously doubt you could do better given the format. Nor have I seen you top 8 an event. Some of the current top 8 have multiple top 8's in this format.
I don't competitively play all the time, but I do know better than to cast stones from a glass house like you're doing here. |

I split the masters four weeks ago.
Glass house? Hardly. I've a vampires deck which is much better than these decks, and even my monoblack version is stronger. And that's just that deck. There are others.
"Given the format?" There's not really any "given the format" excuse here.
So no, I don't feel uncomfortable saying I could have done better, because, well, I could have. T8ing isn't particularly meaningful when the field is full of bad decks. Its like when I T8ed the IABC tournament; it wasn't because I was awesome, but because everyone else sucked.
Its just annoying to see such bad decks T8 when the reason I'm not playing in the tournament is because it is at 7am on a sunday the day after a major real world Magic event. Crankiness and all that.
The decks are running too many bad cards and too few answers. The Jund deck looks okay, but I'm not very impressed (in fact, I'm a bit embarrassed by) several of the decks, including the first vampire and elf decks. They look more casual than tournament-directed. The control deck with only two days of judgement is a very strange choice, for example.

More cranky than smug. I'm sick, the master was at 7am, and the decks which top-8ed are far from impressive. Its kind of one of those days where things which ordinarily would only annoy you a little add up to annoy you a lot.
I'm sorry if I upset any of you by saying your decks sucked. Looking over the decks again, the Jund one was okay, but I wasn't too impressed by the others - one of the vampires decks (the one with the Bloodwitches) was more interesting and less "What are you thinking" than the other one, but I still think it made several bad card choices. Running only two Days of Judgement just seems like a strange choice given the current slant towards aggro. The elf decks are obvious and pretty much casual decks, not really constructed-calibur - yeah, the planeswalker is mildly annoying, but there are a lot of answers for her/the deck and you can kill her pretty easily.
In order:
1) Kaesh's deck only has 8 removal spells, which isn't really enough.
2) Caith's deck runs a wide variety of cards, and while there's something to be said for threat diversity, some of them simply aren't all that good in the first plce. Also, why only three Days of Judgement? This deck is okay, but suboptimal; it looked worse than it actually was on careful inspection.
3) Kreff is running a prety janky deck; it has a lot of stuff which doesn't blend together all that well and not really enough removal relative to its speed.
4) Comodope's deck is not actually all that bad; tendrils again, but he has 11 removal, which is a more reasonable number (I'd still want higher, though). The bloodwitches + soren was an interesting choice, as it is a slower deck, but it runs 24 lands so its not unreasonable, and it should curve out often.
5) Ehri's deck is a bit strange, but is okay, though I think it is running some wrong cards, and it lacks acceleration, which would be nice as a lot of its threats cost a fair amount.
6) Ivan's deck only runs two day of judgement despite his very sparse creature base, and runs a bunch of rather suboptimal cards. Not AWFUL, but there are so many bits which could be improved it looks very casual.
7) Capoeira's deck is elves, and is pretty casual. Not much to say about this deck, other than an aggro deck with sufficient removal should tear it apart, and the deck is very vulnerable to lightning bolts. I'm assuming that Piksano is the same person. And it really has no answer to baneslayer angel or similar big/efficient creatures. A resolved baneslayer can kill the planeswalkers, nullify their entire field with its lifelink, and pretty much just win by itself.
Lame's deck has some real threats, but is slow. An aggressive aggro deck should be able to simply rip it to shreds before it really does anything.
Several of the decks are not AS bad as they looked originally on closer inspection, but they're not exactly amazing decks. |
