Humbly Seeking Experts’ Thoughts On GWu Scepter Chant Idea. Can It Be Done??
I thought of a deck that combines my two favorite strategies, in theory anyway: 1. Scepter Chant 2. GW creature speed
I’m a very strategic thinker, but I don’t really know anything about blocks or specific metagames or all that jazz; strictly casual. This idea might suck, but it could have merit, and it’s likely you pros could think of a couple tweaks that could turn this from “interesting” to “dangerous,” who knows? I’ll offer my own thoughts and intentions after the decklist, then leave the floor open to those who really know what they’re talking about. I’m not looking to enter and crush tournaments or anything, but would like to play casually online without getting repeatedly trounced or having to steal other people’s decks (if at all possible).
Also, I’m not sure if this would be illegal in any formats, but other than 4 Birds’ and a Chrome Mox, I don’t think it would…
GWu Scepter Chant:
Land/Mana:
4 Savannah
4 Tundra
4 Tropical Island
2 Forest
2 Plains
1 Island
1 Chrome Mox
Scepter Stuff:
4 Isochron Scepter
4 Orims Chant
4 Counterspell
2 Mana Leak
4 Fire/Ice
Creatures:
4 Llanowar Elves
4 Birds of Paradise
4 Watchwolf
4 Loxodon Heirarch
4 Anurid Brushhopper
4 Exalted Angel (I just today learned of the Baneslayer Angel, which might be better here, but Apprentice doesn’t recognize it yet)
I won’t bother thinking about a sideboard until I know if this is an idea even worth pursuing yet.
The idea:
Get lucky and scepter a chant or counter early. I figure if I can make that happen, then stalling the greeny weenies for a couple turns until I have 2 mana to scepter with at all times won’t matter so much. If no scepter, then just roll out the cheap creatures right away and use the instants as needed. The blue cards only exist to be scepter’d, but I kept some blue mana around just incase I don’t draw a scepter. I’m wondering if this is maybe inefficient and there are better green or white instants to copy instead of the counters? I’m just thinking to try and slow them to a halt, even if I don’t draw a Chant, so there’s no way they can stop all the creatures from eventually crashing through.
So, in a casual sense, does this idea have any potential merit, assuming some tweaks are suggested? I just love the creature speed of GW, and Scepter Chant is my favorite combo. I was trying to think of how to marry the two. Whether I’m on the right track or not, any thoughts on how it could be done?
Thanks in advance! I look forward to playing some games online, but not until I have a deck worth playing.

I have to run at the moment of reading, but I'll look into those cards for sure when I'm back home.
Though do you think the basic idea could hold up, at least as far as casual play? The GW speed creatures mixed with Scepter? Like, should I even pursue the idea?
And if so, should I keep in the blue stuff for defense?
Thanks guys, you're awesome |

OK, I couldn't resist looking already, tho I'm gonna be late LOL
I was thinking about swords to plowshares.. hmmm, maybe.
gaddock is obviously quite good, but I don't understand how ethersworn will help me. It affects me too, how do I get around that? There's probably something I'm missing, but currently I cant see why it would be better than watchwolf.
Noble heirarch is great, wow! Bye bye elves!
And lastly, is the trail MWS playable and sufficient? (said something about 30 card limit) Im on the broke side at the moment, which sucks because apprentice doesnt have these cards Oh well. Back soon, thanks again! |

| This is a tremendously creative deck! I would say keep watchwolf, once you get the chant going, 3 damage will be better than the 2 that gaddock can deal. Also, I personally think that wearbear is better than anurid brushopper. have you considered any enlightened tutors? |

Oooh, I didn't know about englightened Tutor, that's good!! More scepter > more cowbell :p
And thank you for the "tremendously creative deck" comment To me, that's more flattering than "this deck will win." Seriously. lol
Here's the irony: A few hours after posting this, I was looking at more cards and decks and such, and came up with what I think is an even stronger deck using the same core strategy, but with WGR! I want to post it up, but: a. I don't think it'd be appropriate to do so in this thread, where we're already discussing a different deck b. I don't think it'd be appropriate to create 2 Scepter Chant threads within 24 hours of each other, especially as an unknown lol
Though Enlightened Tutor would work well in the 2nd deck too! It's the same scepter chant + fast green/white creatures idea, except instead of splashing Blue, it's full on GW+Red with both Zoo elements(Kird Ape, Wild Nacatl, Woolly Thoctar) and Lightning Helix and Bolt for removal/burn/Scepter abuse! It gives up the blue counter-stuff, yes, but the Chant and life gain seem like adequate defense, the red-inclusive creatures seem to flow great with the GW creatures, and the added burn spells give another angle for attack ...in theory at least.
Now that I think about it, the Enlightened Tutors would be even cooler in the 2nd deck because if I happen to get Scepter Chant going, I can tutor up another Scepter for a Helix! Helix on a stick makes me have to loosen my belt buckle. lol
I got MWS btw, thanks rentintin3 for suggesting it. I just need to read the tutorial for finding online games then I'll play some tomorrow evening. Though I'm wondering what format(s) these 2 decks (the one listed above and this new WGR idea) would be best played in. The GWR deck doesn't have the Chrome Mox in it, so it seems like it should be cool for Extended, no? I really have no idea, but nothing I searched up seems to suggest any of my cards are restricted. Long as 4 lightning bolts, 2 fireballs, and a lot of dual lands are extended-friendly, the rest should be OK I think.
I'm gonna head to bed. Thanks to everyone for the replies and to notpermanent, seriously, as an old school novice who has more fun dreaming up deck ideas than playing downloaded decklists, your comment made my night
Peace all!

Basically the Deck sucks
No seriously you try to combine to Strategies which both go in the opposite direction.
I would play cheap efficent creatures (like the Watchwolf), Tarmogoyf comes to my mind here.
Cut at least 4 of the Elfs/Birds and play more creatures.
With fewer Manaproducing creatures you should probably go down to two elephants or cut them all.
I would keep the Extalteds, you can sneak them onto the table while still beeing able to have Countermana, and then Flip them Eot, which wont be possible with Baneslayer. |
