I'm running Ubuntu and after updating to the latest Wine, 1.1.5, my MWS is working perfectly with only one noticeable flaw: I can't see any text in MWS Play. I don't mean the card text, I'm talking about the text in MWS play itself, creature names, P/T numbers, counters, notes, mana pool/deck/graveyard/hand/RFG/life total numbers. I can, strictly speaking, play with it like this but it takes a lot of mental calculation to remember what everyone's life totals are at as well as every creature's Power and Toughness are. If I were to play a milling deck I'd have no sweet clue as to the gamestate without counting the cards in my graveyard window manually. All the other issues such as upside down cards, etc were fixed when I upgraded wine except this. Does anyone know how to fix it?

This is currently an open issue, it is know that mws can work perfectly on ubunto but I think a package needs to be installed. Unfortunately I have no idea which one atm.. we are looking into it though.

Also I have no Ubunto installed here so can not really test anything either and no box free either

I agree NecroMage. After updating wine 1.1.5 upside down cards and text are now fixed, you can read them at all the lists (gy, rfg, view hand ,...).
Now the problem is exactly the one that NecroMage said.

Is the solution near? Perhaps wine 1.1.6? :S
If u find the "secret" package needed to be installed, please tell us.
Or if u have some ideas, tell us to test them in our ubuntus.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH !

After installing ubuntu-restricted-extras i can read the names of the cards in play, i can see the p/t, the counters ,... (i suppose that installing this package some windows fonts that are needed for MWS are installed)
I have installed wine 1.1.6. too and ALL works perfectly now.
Thanks again.

i am currently running sidux amd64 with kde3.5.1 and kwin
after running mws using wine v1.01 i had the flaws mentoined by azania (pictures and decklists upside down) so i upgraded to v1.3.1 which fixed this problem
i still wasnt able to see live points, counters, etc however...

the problem are the microsoft fonts
if ur using ubuntu, you can install the package ubuntu-restricted-extras (as mentioned by azania)
if ur using any other debian-based distribution, get msttcorefonts (its an installer that downloads and installs the fonts, they cannot be installed directly, since they are basically not open source)
if ur using any other non-debian based distribution, you will have to google the package or install this fonts manually (don't know if their all required)

http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/andale32.exe
http://ufpr.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/arialb32.exe

http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/trebuc32.exe
http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/verdan32.exe
http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/webdin32.exe
http://puzzle.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/impact32.exe

this fixed all my problems, now everything runs perfekt:

ps: thx to azania and everyone who helped to find the solution
pps: @arealiz & youarenotpro
if you do not know what you're talking about you should better not talk at all
decrying a particular distribution and annoy other people is childish and does not help anyone

I have the latest wine installed(v1.1.14 on ubuntu 8.10). I have the original ms fonts package installed from apt-get's suggestion, and have the restricted extras also installed.
I can run the standard mws app, but when I try to run mwsplay to actually play with the deck I create, it spawns infinite error popups until I kill it. The error says something about memory access in or with gdiplus.dll. Since the error spawns so many times, it quickly becomes a blank white rectangle so I don't have the entire error message.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok, so I was able to write down the error using space bar to close the popups as i wrote.
Title of popup is "MWSPlay 0.94f"
Text of popup is "Access violation at address 70D09697 in module 'gdiplus.dll'. Read of address 00000048"

Anyone ever get this and find a fix?

so i intalled wine 1.0.1 on my mac using macports.
and i managed to get everything to run, with a few minor glitches. For example windows tend to move downwards every time something is clicked.
After reading all this I wanted to remove 1.0.1 and put the 1.1.16 that seems to be better with some of the bug fixes.
I am miserably failing Sad
can anyone help?

EDIT: I just reformated since i didnt have much information.
It is still having the same issue though.

The problem is both mirc and mws start moving downwards as button in the program are clicked, such as changing what channel i am in on mirc.
I don't know if there is a way to fix this.
I would also love to know how to uninstall wine for futur reference.

I don't have a mac myself, but if you're still trying that, look at this thread: http://www.magic-league.com/phpBB/about10227-0-asc-45.html

Also, I know a lot of people use Fink to add linux programs to OSX, they have wine 1.1.24 "unstable" which should probably work well. Unstable (usually) doesn't actually mean it's likely to crash, it means it's not fully tested, and occationally have "regressions" which mean you lose a feature or two due to a bug.

Good luck.

yes there is a work around i dont know if it is a good idea of one though renaming gdiplus.dll file will stop the error but i dont know if this is a viable option to get mws fully working in linux but it will stop the error i have only been able to get it partially working from wines site they are currently on wine-1.1.33 for the development package

This is winehq now though. I dont know the significance but i think winehq is the new project and maybe the 1.1.4-6 versions that are talked about on this thread are still out on the web for download somewhere i think the key is trying to find those versions. I have mws installed and 90% working but during gameplay it is crappy and the cards in hand wont display. im using 1.1.32 from winehq

I installed wine 1.1.6 as well and to no avail not working fully

the best working so far for me has been 1.1.32 as of nov 18 2009 latest is 1.1.33 as i am installing that one from source now as it is only in source package on sourceforge

1.1.32 i installed that one first b/c there is debian based packages for ubuntu as i am running 9.04 ubuntu

i am upgrading one of my other machines to ubunut 9.10 as well

i am fighting to get this working FULLY

I think maybe a lot has to do with distro etc I have used linux since 1996 so im pretty well versed and i work with it on my job on a regular basis as i am in house linux admin on sle version 10 machines

anyway i will provide additional feedback if i come up with something

I saw this post on google. I wanted to add to it.

Code:
coreyman@coreyman-desktop:~$ wine --version
wine-1.1.42

Code:
Linux version 2.6.32-24-generic-pae (buildd@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 19 02:43:57 UTC 2010 (Ubuntu 2.6.32-24.41-generic-pae 2.6.32.15+drm33.5)

I also installed wintricks with vcrun6.

I tried running mws in opengl mode.

I can't roll the die.
I can't see mana cost on the cards.
All the cards on the table are black with the name readable up top.
If I tap a card I can no longer see it.
After playing for 3-4 minutes the whole screen becomes locked up.

I can not play MWS with wine on ubuntu 10.04, kde4. If anyone knows how to fix the game locking up, and the tapping issue, and the die issue. I may be able to play.
