MWS really is rigged

by CMA-Flippi on 2009-03-31 19:15 EDT
There were many complaints to staff about the MWS shuffler in the past. Hundreds of players accused their opponents of manipulating the shuffler in some way or another.

We have always exhibited a behavior of ignoring such accusations. The reason is because we believe in the principle "In doubt, on behalf of the culprit".
This basically means: Until we (judge staff) can prove someone is using an engine which derandomizes draws,
we will not make rulings against that person.

In the past, Apprentice was the number one playing application for magic-league. It was well-known that there are ways to cheat on Apprentice which mainly arise from how Apprentice communicates its data between 2 computers. Having made research on Apprentice and its exploits, magic-league's technical staff Laplie has developped the so called MlAnti Softwarein past. It detects Cheating software pretty well, so magic-league could provide a cheat-free playing platform for Apprentice with MlAnti.

MWS transmits its vital information very similarly. The advantage of MWS is that players also have the option to play via servers (mwsplay.net mwsgames.net pavouk.square.cz mws-magic.league.com ).

Unfortunately, someone recently discovered how to work around MWS's normal functionality even if you're playing on a server.
I had a long talk with various people but we're yet to find a solution for the MWS hack.

So magic-league staff got aware of an MWS hack. Our short-term resolution is to take down the magic-league MWS server (mws-magic.league.com). Seeing we have no way to detect the abuse on MWS yet, we will switch our shedule to Apprentice tournaments only.

You can still play on MWS if you wish, but you will at your own risk. Note that we
still have no way to determine whether someone uses additional software to play with MWS or not.

And now we've got some good news. Jorbes finds more time to work on his project OPT ( ww.onlineplaytable.com ) again so we can await this application getting ready for (constructed-)tournaments on magic-league in April.
You can find useful guides helping you to use OPT at
http://onlineplaytable.com/guide.html and/or

The latest News post about OPT can be found at

OPT is ready to play Magic on already, so I suggest you try it out !
For this purpose, there exists a channel on solidirc specifically for OPT players on #opt http://onlineplaytable.com/guide.html

by plusua on 2009-03-31 20:25 EDT

So all these MWS tourneys being held aren't to be played on that server or what? Where is if there is a safe place to play? MWS...

by TugaChampion on 2009-03-31 20:45 EDT

ROFLMAO

by SteveMan on 2009-03-31 20:56 EDT

If you were pro like me, you'd be able to beat the hacker regardless

by Delicious on 2009-03-31 21:37 EDT

happy April fool's day :D

by caesarthehun on 2009-03-31 21:58 EDT

That explains how i won with a belcher deck...

by Mtgfanatic01 on 2009-03-31 22:07 EDT

I love how every year they do this, and you get people who don't know that its aprils fools day. Makes my tummy tickle. :)

by ik on 2009-03-31 22:26 EDT

Wait is this a joke or not... lol

by Tird_Ape on 2009-03-31 23:24 EDT

Its not april fools day and doesnt look like a joke.

by brimstone on 2009-04-01 01:29 EDT

Joke or not, the 237 trial is seriously on apprentice

by SaTiVa on 2009-04-01 01:55 EDT

my vote is on april fool's joke :)

by Sofa0King on 2009-04-01 03:05 EDT

There is no such thing as OPT. Only a craptacular program that might now suck in about 7 versions.

Btw, I preferred the Temple one better.

by darksigma on 2009-04-01 03:35 EDT

The temple joke was more credible, lol xD

by PV on 2009-04-01 07:24 EDT

I think this one is way more credible

by MistyFatDog on 2009-04-01 07:31 EDT

APRIL FOOLS! but this one is more credible than mtg temple cause that is full of people banned from m-l

by MrBrett on 2009-04-01 08:01 EDT

good one lol

by Lunari_ on 2009-04-01 08:12 EDT

I miss the pink background :(

by TugaChampion on 2009-04-01 08:19 EDT

I agree with PV: this one is more credible. I mean this one could be possible but the other one? No way.

by darksigma on 2009-04-01 09:26 EDT

Well i didnt know that in mtg temple there are lots of banned ppl from m-l like lordhawk, now that i know it, its obvious that this is more credible, xD

by Craze on 2009-04-01 11:54 EDT

April Fools Day lol

Why people actually believe things they hear on March 31st, I will never know.

by Wiley on 2009-04-01 17:20 EDT

I thought this was actually pretty funny! Way funnier than last year's April Fool's. Good job Flippi

by Yatre on 2009-04-01 18:46 EDT

This is why i quit magic-league. It was only a matter of time until someone figured out that the shuffler was rigged, and then i would stop winning. Seriously, those people who think this is just an april's fool joke need to look at the source code for the program. :P

by Esibnitsud on 2009-04-01 19:54 EDT

i dont know why its not here but derflippi created a video showing the hack in progress

by Tird_Ape on 2009-04-01 20:16 EDT

Ahhhh is it a joke or what???

by isperia on 2009-04-01 20:37 EDT

Stop fooling people yet... please :D

by Tird_Ape on 2009-04-01 21:15 EDT

You got me lol!

by Vedrfolner on 2009-04-02 03:45 EDT

MWS really IS rigged since the shuffler is completely mathematically randomized. This means that you are as likely as getting 200 opening hands with no lands in a row, as a hand with 3 lands and 4 cards.

This means that you will NOT get a mathematically average hand if you register your opening hand over 100 games and divide by 100. Over 100 games, the average could be anything. As will it be over a hundred million games.

Yes, the MWS shuffler is indeed rigged... rigged to be anamolous.

by Wiley on 2009-04-03 23:52 EDT

That is the stupidest mathematical argument I've ever heard.

by SoggyToast on 2009-04-05 15:38 EDT
