Rogue Deck Building Challenge

by JimmyJohnJoe on 2006-05-29 16:03 MDT
Okay everyone, here is the run down: You make a rogue deck list that CANNOT be a tier 1 or 2 list. For example, changing one card in b/w husk is not allowed. Your lists will be graded on Four sections:
#1 Solidness: this category focuses on how your deck plays out against the tier 1 archetypes.
#2 Originality: We like to see new card combos, even if it’s not a power house combo.
#3 Article: You will need to write an article about your list, including: why you chose certain cards, matchup analysis, and any other additional comments.
#4 Tournament: On a certain day (not determined yet) we will run a mini (no max depending on size of entries). The winner of the mini will get 10 points (on the grade for the list), 2nd place gets 7, and 3rd place gets 4.
All sections have a grade scale of 1-10 in the case of a tie in the overall section. The tiebreaker goes to the person with the highest originality points.

Articles@magic-league.com ( for submitting your entry) must have your list and the article or it's not a valid entry. CONTEST ends June 15th, 2006

This Contests Format is Standard!!!!
Have fun and we look forward to seeing the entries.

Revisions of existing archetypes will be accepted if they contain a significant change. Changing 1 card in Ghost Dad is NOT a significant change but a total color shift is quite significant. If you do 'update' a deck, it would definitely be to your advantage if you list the reasons why your updated deck is better than the older version.

Example: WB tron and why it may be better than UR or URg tron

Hmmm, might try that. I suck writing articles though.

I'm all over this!!!

by coppro on 2006-05-29 16:13 MDT

Two questions:

What are the current Tier 1/2/3 lists?

And, if you modify a deck significantly, and in a fairly original fashion (like, say, redesigning Heartbeat in some way that is hugely new), does that count?

Tier 1 list are things like b/w husk. Tier 2 i consider Ideal.

by kebe on 2006-05-29 16:27 MDT

way to make my ideal tier 2
ill just have to cope

by EQ_killa on 2006-05-29 16:41 MDT

I only play rogue decks so this should be fun but I dont like people knowing my decklist. maybe i will do one i don't play alot. can i send in 2?

by Markwerf on 2006-05-29 16:44 MDT

In what program do you make a article actually and in what format do u send it in? Does magic-league.com add the pictures of key cards and redoes some layout or do u have to send it in in exactly the right format. Also like others liked to know i would like some clarification about certain already existing deck type. Zoo for example is kinda vague and isnt always the same colors right? Or does it just stand for 3 color aggro?
(though im guessing if your wondering wether your deck is new enough or not your not gonna win anyway)
Edit: Do all 4 parts count equally? If so originality is counted rather low as it only affects 1/4 of the score (though indirectly the article). Current setup maybe doesnt encourage originality as having a good deck counts more (2 out of 4 categories).

by compucrazy on 2006-05-29 16:45 MDT

Articles@magic-league.com is where we e-mail our decklists and articles right?

by coppro on 2006-05-29 17:02 MDT

I'd suggest the article being in the email as the body, then a small bit in the subject saying that it is a contest entry. Or add it as an attachment. But I could be wrong.

by Quetzilla on 2006-05-29 17:22 MDT

How will "solidness" me graded? (as in practically)

by Red_Mage on 2006-05-29 17:42 MDT

Did you want the article to be written in HTML code? Plain Text and you'll do the editing yourselves?

Hmmm, I am thinking a Thread is in order!

I assume the format to build the deck is Standard?

and how do you determine who will be 3rd and fourth in the mini, since its single elimination? you should reward semi-finalists with the same amount of points?

P.

by schult-tog on 2006-05-29 21:41 MDT

i have one i think i am going to nationals with

by compucrazy on 2006-05-29 22:24 MDT

when you said contest ends june 15th does that mean when submissions stop or when the winner will be declared.

by M_Pietrzak on 2006-05-30 03:45 MDT

in which type must be that rogue?

nvm :)

me lame - Standard

by Dragon_Lady on 2006-05-30 06:53 MDT

This is a fine idea that rewards creativity. GJ LordHawk ^^

by Benobi on 2006-05-30 07:32 MDT

Sweet, we really have needed this for a while! I've always been a bit depressed that most tournament magic players run net-decks. On the plus side, though, they ususally don't have a clue as to what to SB against you.

by Holzi on 2006-05-30 13:47 MDT

For T2???

by Benobi on 2006-05-30 21:23 MDT

yup, standard = t2

by fingon on 2006-05-31 09:06 MDT

kiki-husser ftw

by Meldethar on 2006-05-31 17:19 MDT

Yay for Fish :)

by kendiggy on 2006-05-31 18:38 MDT

if ensnaring bridge was in this format, this would be so much easier...

by norbert88 on 2006-06-01 12:22 MDT

So is there a prize involved? or just points?

norbert88

by ninjew on 2006-06-01 18:51 MDT

by bb_bart on 2006-06-02 21:27 MDT

by WebMogg on 2006-06-04 09:54 MDT

Hmm...interesting contest idea: Send in all of your unique and creative ideas for us to learn from, and we'll give you nothing as a prize. Tech.

by ThEliGht on 2006-06-04 18:58 MDT

winner should probs get 60 store credit :)

by Ownj00 on 2006-06-05 02:32 MDT

make a prize and ill drop some tech right quick

by JimmyJohnJoe on 2006-06-05 02:56 MDT

I have talked to a good friend. He is gunna make a special banner for the forums. The winner will get that banner. I know its not much but this is a free league after all.

by pcmkr726 on 2006-06-06 13:31 MDT

When will my article be posted? I sent it about a week and a half ago.

by Columbus on 2006-06-07 18:03 MDT

I seriously hope Rat's article on the 300 card Zoo deck won't be taken into consideration for the prize. Sure, it's (semi) funny, but that wouldn't be very fair to all the real players who took time to build a deck and write an article about it. More people would vote for Rat's article obviously because they think it's funny.
That would be crap.

by Spyx on 2006-06-08 18:08 MDT

Well obviously his deck isn't solid..
