by InWaking on 2012-08-09 04:51 CET

I bet the finals were boring as hell, and I loves some stax but if someone gets rid of elspeth is it auto lose?

by SteveMan on 2012-08-09 05:04 CET

In all my years of playing Stax, I can only remember Elspeth being Surgical / Cranial Extraction / Extipated once (twice if anything).

by pg8 on 2012-08-09 05:25 CET

It's hard to Extirpate through Chalice at 1.

by mtgsoldier on 2012-08-09 10:04 CET

Mini tournament report

R1 Vs Ravager Affinity

Game 1 - He had Arcbound Ravager and a Memnite or two I think. I shut him down fast with Moat + Crucible / Wasteland.

Game 2 - I think I mulled to 6 and kept a slow hand but it had Ghostly Prison + Crucible / Wasteland. I thought I'd be able to slow him down enough to lock him out but an unexpected Spell Pierce on my Ghostly Prison ruined my day :/

Game 3 - I mulled down to 4 cards: City of Traitors / Flagstones / Horizon Canopy / Null Rod. Naturally, I lead off with City of Traitors - > Null Rod. My opponent threw down Blinkmoth Nexus / Springleaf Drum / 2 Memnites. He tried to use Springleaf Drum to play Frogmite but I told him that does not work under Null Rod.

Next turn he attacked for 2 and played Frogmite, which I Oblivion Ringed on my turn. The turn after, he played Pestermite and which I topdecked Swords to Plowshares for. He goes on beating me down for 2 for a turn or 2 then I finally topdecked Elspeth and Moat for lockdown.

R2 vs RUG Delver

Game 1 - Double Ghostly Prison + Crucible / Wasteland locked him out pretty fast.

Game 2 - I had a turn 1 Chalice of the Void. He threw down a Tarmogoyf that eventually got to 5/6 by countering a lot of my stuff that I baited to him so I can resolve Humility and Moat for the lock.

R3 vs Maverick

Game 1 - I blew him out really fast with a turn 2 or 3 Humility followed by a Moat.

Game 2 - I had a hand that was capable of turn 2 Humility. Unfortunately, he played Gaddock Teeg on turn 2. I was able to Oblivion Ring it on my turn but on his next turn he cast Qasali Pridemage to bomb my Oblivion Ring and Gaddock Teeg locked out my hand of Moat / Humility / Elspeth :/

Game 3 - This game was really long and drawn out. I remember I drew 3 Moats and 2 of them got bombed but I was able to ultimate with Elspeth to make the 3rd one indestructible. I thought I had it locked down from there but then he used Fauna Shaman to tutor up Scryb Ranger and attacked in the air with Jitte. Luckily for me, I had Crucible / Horizon Canopy up and found Humility for the lockdown.

R4 - Bye

Finals vs BG Pox

Game 1 - I was on the draw and had turn 1 Chalice of the Void on 1, turn 2 Moat, turn 3 Humility. Unfortunately to my dismay, he was playing Bayous, so I was afraid he was going to Pernicious Deed my whole board later.

After I threw down Humility, he used Hymn to Tourach to take out my last 2 cards in hand (I think it was land + Oblivion Ring). He eventually threw down a Liliana of the Veil and used her ultimate on me. He split it up so that it was only Moat in 1 pile and everything else in the other. I sacrificed the Moat and kept the rest of my board. He started beating me with Mishra's Factory for a bit but then I topdecked Elspeth and proceeded to kill him and his Liliana.

Game 2 - I think I kept a hand of Leyline of Sanctity / Oblivion Ring / 5 lands. I played the turn 0 Leyline, he played Swamp go and all I did was play a Plains. On my endstep he Entombs (which really caught me off guard). I thought he was going for Griselbrand or something (I really had no clue what he was playing) but he went for Nether Spirit. He recurred the Spirit and played Urborg and passed. I topdecked Chalice of the Void and played it for 1 (which probably was a bad move since I already had Leyline). In response he Entombed AGAIN and threw Worm Harvest in his graveyard.

He swung with Nether Spirit again and I topdecked Humility and played it. He threw down a Liliana of the Veil but I Oblivion Ringed it the next turn then followed with Moat the turn after. I then drew Crucible of Worlds and started to recur Wasteland. I thought I had him but then he played a Bojuka Bog to remove my Wasteland then cast Life from the Loam to rebuild his manabase. He then Krosan Gripped my Moat. I wasn't too worried because I had another Moat in hand. I topdecked Chalice of the Void and decided to play Chalice set at 3 before casting the Moat so that I can protect my Moat against any other Krosan Grips or Pernicious Deed / Maelstrom Pulse. After that I played Moat followed by an Elspeth and proceeded to win.

the best deck won

by Duodax on 2012-08-09 18:31 CET

no: "and which I topdecked Swords to Plowshares for. He goes on beating me down for 2 for a turn or 2 then I finally topdecked Elspeth and Moat for"

deck cant be the best if it has to rip not just one card but a sequence of the right cards to stay alive. therefore delver is the best deck thanks to 12 cantrips

by SteveMan on 2012-08-09 19:36 CET

I agree with Duodax, Although I think my deck is extremely powerful (on par with Sneak and Show), RUG is by far the most consistent deck in the format...

Fortunately for me, I'm geared to stomp on RUG :)

Well Dutchstaxx is a nice call, happy to see it winning something.

And well, speaking of the best and most consistent deck in Legacy:

Such a great call right now. Love it.
