Sakura ramping into nothing costing more than 4 aside from 2 Clouds; Gifts package without Unburial Rites; Team Go Team

by Halldir on 2012-04-28 12:54 CET

sakura ramps into cloud...

by [-a-L-e-] on 2012-04-28 13:15 CET

damnation t3 against zoo/affinity is bad? garruk t3 is bad? also, in the sb there's 2 curse that has cc5 and in the maindeck there a singleton garruk primal hunter...

c'mon maps, lol.

by Shagrath on 2012-04-28 13:30 CET

1st place is not by any means a rock deck.

by [-a-L-e-] on 2012-04-28 13:32 CET

it's not like if you have sakura in your deck you have to play primeval titan/karn/etc xD.

by MastSkellum on 2012-04-28 17:22 CET

Quote ale, of course!

by Russell_Nash on 2012-04-28 18:44 CET

Why no black source for Unburial Rites in UW Gifts?

What if they choose for you to put Unburial Rites in your hand from gifts?

You only find two cards with gifts, so they can't put it in your hand.

So, a card that is little more than rampant growth, maybe rampant growth + 3 life, is good in this midrange deck? T3 Garruk is obviously better than t2 Garruk. That doesn't make it good, ofc.

Like, imagine playing Rampant Growth in Jund because you play 2 Profane Command and 4 Bloodbraid Elf. It'd obviously be horrible.

And you can find 2 cards and Gifts fails and they both go to the graveyard.

And ofc, why is that deck better than Jund? ISNT

DEAD MEATS

Maps obv doesn't knows what he's talking about

by Kurtgrunge on 2012-04-29 01:13 CET

Rampant Growth in Jund is so horrible that in t2 Saito went 6-0 with those MD to beat the mirror
=)

by maps on 2012-04-29 02:40 CET

Yeah, because t2 is totally the same as modern, right? Acceleration is totally the same in a format that is not defined in any way by land destruction and that is instead much faster, right...

Anyway:

by pg8 on 2012-04-29 00:38 CET
Sakura-Tribe Elder is so bad in that first list, why would you accelerate into t3 Garruk... wait...

Yeah, a bit ashamed of myself for indulging in this, but you have to realize that you can't evaluate a card based on how it effects your nut draw.

You can't say Sakura is good because it accelerates into t3 Garruk. You have to think about:
A) How good is acceleration in situations without a t3 Garruk
B) How much better are your expensive cards when they come out earlier.
C) How good is the acceleration the turn past t3 Garruk, or whatever other expensive card you play.

The thing is that Garruk, while obviously better on t3 than t4, isn't worth running Sakura for. In fact, you'd be much better just running some sort of removal spell (Smother or something)to help protect your t4 Garruk, or to help ensure that Garruk dominates the board. And that is WHEN YOU HAVE GARRUK. In the situations where you don't have Garruk, you would 100% of the time rather have Smother, given that your only other expensive spells are 2 Death Clouds and a Big Garruk. Smother also answers Twin combo.

But Sakura is better versus Control/Storm/Tron! Sure, but it's still bad against those decks. Whatever tiny advantage Sakura gives you there is not worth playing it over a card that is much better in every other match.

Now, it just so happens that the BG deathcloud deck is pooly designed. It's just not focused in such a way to ensure that Sakura is good. It's trying to be a midrange deck, and then it randomly jams in Sakura. Could you imagine Jund playing Sakura? Now imagine Jund wants to play 2 Profane Command and a Garruk, Primal Hunter. Is it worth playing Sakura then? No, of course not. The likelihood of accelerating into Death Cloud is too unlikely to make that a viable plan.

Playing sakura lets you play 24 land, which isn't a huge amount of lands for a midrange/control deck that runs 4 tec edge.Having sakura in the deck helps to ensure you get your land drops AND the right mana in case you don't have two BB lands in hand ready for Liliana t3,it can make you attack with treetop village a turn before while playing something the same turn.Having it helps you accelerate into both garruk planeswalker, into damnation against zoo/affinity,lets you play faster deathcloud if you can play a walker and have him survive one turn while putting you ahead in the land count in order to make at least a land survive to the cloud itself. It helps you not lose the "land race" while being able to tectonic edge the opponent, all of this while saving you from one attack from a creature of the opponent,it even helps when you need to play eternal witness+removal spell/tarmogoyf/finks/liliana the same turn.It gets even better when you side in the more expensive stuff.I see no reason to judge sakura so bad in a deck like that.

I'm not saying he's an idiot for playing Sakura, just saying that it's wrong.

by pankill on 2012-04-29 11:34 CET

well this deck was played a lot one year ago be4 nacatl was banned cause it got very good matchup vs zoo obviously.I think at this meta jund is strictly better than it got to agree though it has good distruption most matchups in would like my 2 drop to be confidant and no elder nowdays and my 4 drop bbelf than ramping to deathcloud when i would be dead to storm most of times or to twin or propably mindlsaverd.Point is that sakura-tribe elder is ok in that deck but you are missing the point tha deck overall is bad in this current meta .
