RDW wins an untested format.

Shocker.

I hate RDW...

by Joseki on 2012-01-01 00:53 CET

That was probably the best mono red deck to see standard play. Crushed Sam Black right out of the finals at US Nats. :[

by asamodious on 2012-01-01 06:49 CET

I was at nats that year joseki...it was quite the beating for sam black indeed.

by AkYo on 2012-01-01 08:55 CET

I like the 2 Explores .. that number is key :)

by Eldariel on 2012-01-01 14:32 CET

It was a good mono-red to wield against Faeries and lots of the multicolor trash you face in BYOT2. I'm inclined to point out how ridiculously strong Urza-era decks are in the format but those take a lot of nowadays-unconventional piloting skill and frankly, most new players don't know all the decks legal from way back then so they tend towards picking up something they're familiar with.

by xJudicatorx on 2012-01-01 15:39 CET

Rule 1 of the untested format: Always play Faeries if you can.

Rule 2 of the untested format: RDW trashes Faeries.

by Eldariel on 2012-01-01 16:16 CET

Hardly untested. More like people who know shit about BYOT2 weren't playing. Tinker would steamroll this format.

I can't see that list beating Faeries consistently. The reason playing Faeries is the number 1 rule of untested formats is because it's excellent at dealing with unexpected threats. Particularly with Cryptic Command, you have answers for pretty much anything. And Bitterblossom is every bit as broken as Necropotence.

"And Bitterblossom is every bit as broken as Necropotence."

Everything you said made sense up until that last line.

Necropotence >>> Bitterblossom. Necropotence is banned in Legacy and Bitterblossom is not.

by Eldariel on 2012-01-01 19:02 CET

Judicator: Bitterblossom isn't even good in Modern; Necropotence is banned. Bitterblossom was strong in that T2 due to how slow the format was. The way to punish it is to play one-drops. Have you ever wondered why Extended Faeries tended to eschew BB? And why the deck is barely played in Legacy? It's true that BB can grow to be a problem for Tinker though due to it randomly interacting well with Tangle Wire.

by xJudicatorx on 2012-01-01 20:03 CET

Bitterblossom isn't good in modern because it's banned.

by Eldariel on 2012-01-01 21:14 CET

Touché. It wasn't heavily played in the previous Extendeds, though.

by xJudicatorx on 2012-01-01 21:18 CET

I beg to differ.

You can see several Faeries lists there(UB lists of course, sometimes extended Caw-Blade is referred to as UW Faeries) and each of them packs 4 brokenblossoms.

by mishimakaz on 2012-01-01 21:36 CET

Actually toward the end of that Extended season,
UW Fae > UB Fae

Bitterblossom is pretty nuts, but I would not call it broken.

by Pushover on 2012-01-02 06:40 CET

UW fae was better because stoneforge was more broken than BB.
