congrats to Yatre

by TugaChampion on 2007-06-07 06:51 MDT

well 2nd place deck is Bur control and 3rd place is more like GRw gruul or light Gruul or w/e you want to call it but irt shouldn't be called just Gruul.

by fuertecito on 2007-06-07 06:53 MDT

gj volrath

by bgalb on 2007-06-07 06:57 MDT

correct me if im worng, but the 3rd deck is looking more like a Zoo then a gruul

by Vodka_7up on 2007-06-07 07:13 MDT

well that's just fucking crazy!
on a non sarcastic note, yeah you're right bgalb

by Volrath89 on 2007-06-07 07:19 MDT

My deck is called Korlash Control.

The final match was pretty good (we took more than an hour) Yatre was with 3 cards on library and 2 life on g2 and I misplayed g3 of the finals =/ =/ =/ should won...

Congrats all!

by Ro on 2007-06-07 07:31 MDT

Hmm. interesting...

off-topic: Since I can't wish vlada a happy birthday today (I'm banned from solidirc), I'll do it via here:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VLADA!!!!!!!

by Jokulgoblin on 2007-06-07 07:40 MDT

Volrath: Why Rise/Fall? Were they particularly good in that build? If you could Transmute for them, I could see it, but maybe (likely) I'm just too dumb to see the need.

by wyJETe on 2007-06-07 07:43 MDT

hey volrath nice deck i had a 3-0-0 record with basicly the same list a few sb diffrences ut my opponent called me on slow playing (i wasnt just truing to play around worship) so they kicked me out of the tourny sad face and rise/fall is so goodit is discard early and late return a huge guy from the greve bounce one of there guys ya its great

by Jokulgoblin on 2007-06-07 07:48 MDT

Ahhh... As a wise man once said, "RTFC!"

Sorry, Volrath, I was too caught up in the discard side of Rise/Fall to notice the other 50% of the card and do the math on returning House Guards and Korlashs.

by aldaryn on 2007-06-07 07:56 MDT

also, dimir house guard -does- transmute for it...rise/fall has cmc 4 anywhere but the stack i believe

It doesn't... cmc of Rise/Fall is 2 and 2, thats why you take 4 damage if revealed with a confidant... but you can't search itwith house guard.

And that card is awesome in the deck.. you can transmute a house guard for a detritivore, suspend it for 1 and when it comes into play return detri and house guard to hand to replay both =)

by sgtpepper87 on 2007-06-07 08:19 MDT

3rd place deck is gruul??

well, think again

by TugaChampion on 2007-06-07 08:55 MDT

it's not zoo either as it lacks savannah lions (which can be explained by a meta with many Sulfur Elementals). But I think it has too little white to be called zoo.

by uberman on 2007-06-07 09:03 MDT

Just some things I noticed....

5 Angelfire... What the hell happened to this deck having a good matchup vs everything? It really should atleast top 3 once in awhile.

No Tron? Its a good deck remember?

And wheres the GW aggro everyone was raving about last tourney? I figured atleast 4 or 5 people were gonna play it.

by Eldar on 2007-06-07 09:04 MDT

no DHG CANNOT transmute for rise/fall it was ruled so in the SCG 1k t8. Each of those spells has a CVC of 2 and a combined of 4 so you need a 2 CVC transmuter like muddle the mixture to do so. It appears u copied the list from the scg t8 volrath congrats though I do like this deck. That is mostly gruul with some white not really zoo I agree.

To put the house guard thing bluntly:
Dark Confidant + Rise/Fall = lose 4 adding the CVCs of 2 and 2

Dimir House Guard + Rise/Fall = searches for a CVC of 4 and finds a split spell with two CVC of 2.

by aldaryn on 2007-06-07 09:10 MDT

sorry for the confusion, but i swear i read scg 1k t8 coverage on magicthegathering.com that said he DID transmute for it...my bad. :(

i love angelfire but it's only decent against dralnu, and the d-storm and dredge matchups are really, really bad...i have to dedicate my whole sb to them...it wrecks anything aggro though

by ThePimpImp on 2007-06-07 09:19 MDT

He did transmute for it, the judges rules incorrectly I'm pretty sure.

But rise/fall is still amazing

by seb_ on 2007-06-07 09:21 MDT

seems to be a cool idea calling any beatdown deck with red and green in it gruul from now on /ironie off

by ringman on 2007-06-07 09:32 MDT

congratz yatre and volrath89!!

by therooster on 2007-06-07 09:33 MDT

Rise/Fall has 2 converted mana costs, 2 and 2. You could transmute for it with muddle the mixture, but since house guard costs 4, in the world of magic 2 + 2 != 4.

When you flip Rise/Fall with Dark Confidant, it is asking "What is your CMC?" and the answer is 2 and 2, so you take 2 and 2 damage.

In this case, same thing... if you try and transmute, the CMC is 2 and 2. You can transmute muddle for Rise OR Fall, but you can't transmute house for Rise/Fall :P

At SCG yes the guy screwed up, the judge finally caught it in the top 8... where he had been doing that all tournament. Hell even BDM screwed up in his article monday or whatever. But no, the judge was right, you can't get it with house guard.

Regardless of all this, Rise/Fall is still quite good in this deck. Against Dragonstorm you can potentially make them drop 2 relevant cards, or at least draw out a remand. Against pretty much anything else, you can gradeur a korlash, then use Rise to return Korlash from graveyard and bounce an opposing threat. This will allow you to pump out 4 extra swamps and +4/+4 for Korlash ;)

by Rotstejn on 2007-06-07 09:44 MDT

The 3th deck is Gruul + Watchwolf :-)

by Ironicus on 2007-06-07 10:32 MDT

Project X sa chi en criss, attend un peu mon esti! J'vais le gagner moi aussi mon trial!

by sc4rs on 2007-06-07 10:50 MDT

Volrath89 - Well, apparently all you needed to do last trial was not play me and get horribly unlucky. :P Well done!

by buda on 2007-06-07 13:20 MDT

Volrath89: i am very curios how that deck can beat a fast gruul or boros? i know tehre tendrills but in the first 4-5 turns you can only tendrils for like 3-4???? Apart from that, that list is very solid.

by PV on 2007-06-07 13:44 MDT

well since nobody said it yet, you can't really transmute for rise fall since it's 2 cmc of 2

:PPPPP

by Greatness on 2007-06-07 13:50 MDT

Buda: I watched volrath play against G-Dub considering he was at my place during the tourney. I like Volrath's deck and it is very good.

Both had good draws both games. Problem was game one was double damnation double tendrils. Game 2 was damnation and triple tendrils.

All tendrils were urborg powered both games. I like volrath's deck and he is a good player. I just couldn't rely and drawing an urborg every game to beat aggro. To beat good aggro draws that is what is needed.

PS: Rise/Fall is a house, you use both abilities frequently in that deck.

by mikeyk159 on 2007-06-07 14:23 MDT

the zoo deck looks like its playing a standard gruul build with splashing heavy white for watchwolf and helix, saffi, and calciderm? weird to me but whatever

if it was playing hierarch and Savannah lions like it should be, then it would be zoo

by darktime90 on 2007-06-07 16:10 MDT

ohh Volrath89 good job men jejejeje

lalala your deck is good .... we had a good match

see ya

by Ffancrzy on 2007-06-07 16:30 MDT

I think the deck your calling "beach House" is glittering wish control....just give u the heads up Flippi

BTW I love those meta game breakdowns

by dustyngo on 2007-06-07 16:40 MDT

i beated gdub, but some champion, made a mistake, congrats gdub, thanx Eldariel

by Nafai on 2007-06-07 17:33 MDT

how does the deck beat dragonstorm g1? hope that fall + maybe a persecute gets the job done?

by Vlada on 2007-06-07 17:44 MDT

Congrat to Yatre.

by Vlada on 2007-06-07 17:45 MDT

AND BTW YOU CANT TRANSUMTE FOR RISE WITH GUARD...

few more comments like this and we are getting up to 100 'you cant transmute blah blah blah' comments....

by Cranemaker21 on 2007-06-07 18:05 MDT

dimir houseguard can't transmute for hit/run

on a more serious note.. i think that korlash control is the best control deck for regionals... unless you are a good dralnu player(i always get draws because opponents are slow but not slow enough to call a judge)

by Volrath89 on 2007-06-07 19:34 MDT

by Nafai on 2007-06-07 19:33 EDT

how does the deck beat dragonstorm g1? hope that fall + maybe a persecute gets the job done?

The best way (because your persecute will usually be remanded) is to wait until DS player makes the combo... expect he does it x4 and search 4 hellkites. Then you play a tendrils just to keep alive, then untap, damnation go.

You obviously try to play a Fall just to prevent he plays a DSx5... if he does it... well just hope he has 2 dragons on hand =P, otherwise just start sideboarding for g2...

by WiCkEdWiZaRd on 2007-06-07 22:32 MDT

Obv playing lions in Zoo is bad atm moment because Sulfur elemnetal is played quite a bit.

by onecleanceli on 2007-06-07 22:52 MDT

what are the riftsweepers for in zoo sideboard please??

by Royalty on 2007-06-07 23:01 MDT

take away lotus blooms

by poopascoopa on 2007-06-07 23:13 MDT

Congratulations, Yatre. Nice netdeck. Oh wait..that's all you ever play.

Oh well. Congratulations winning with someone else's deck.

by aldaryn on 2007-06-08 00:19 MDT

building decks is not the only thing you do in magic...it takes more skill and for me is more fun to actually PLAY the game...

i netdecked project x too to try it out and i have to say it was very hard for me to learn...

by G-Dub on 2007-06-08 01:14 MDT

The deck i played is not the same as the conventional zoo but its certainly not gruul. I didnt play lions bc of elemental (which i ran into twice) And Tarmgoyf really is better than boros and the other creatures in conventional zoo. Tarmgoyf is bad in gruul. In zoo its consistently a 3/4 or bigger. Thats another thing that sets it aside. For onecleanceli the riftsweepers are for blooms which was noted and also for detrivore later on, usually hold it back for it vs decks that use it. As greatness noted earlier he watched me play volrath and im definitely not taking anything away from him bc hes one of the best players on the site but 5 tendrils and 3 damnation in two games was game over :(. GG's none the less, at least i lost to someone good. I woulda lost to project x ne way if i had won bc it consistently beats aggro, so it wasnt a huge deal. Also for those above who seemed shocked that gruul wasnt in the top 3 its because its not the best aggro deck in the format. I used to feel as if gruul was the best aggro deck in the format, but its not. Zoo has certainly proven to be almost as consistent and better. Thats my personal opinion you can think what you want. This version seems to beat gruul easy. I beat 2 gruuls 2-0 in the tourney and ive beat it a ton in testing. Tarmogoyf is a house. Well it was fun, congrats yatre and volrath.

by G-Dub on 2007-06-08 02:25 MDT

And Poopascoopa keep taking shots at yatre, 2nd highest rating on the site, i dont care if he netdecks everything hes pretty damn good at playing them. Its not like he doesnt tweak them. Majority of magic players net deck and tweak. Moron

by Revik on 2007-06-08 04:41 MDT

If he won a trial netdecking proj. x, imagine what would've happened if he netdecked something GOOD!

by G-Dub on 2007-06-08 04:47 MDT

X is good .. god some people.

by Yatre on 2007-06-09 04:16 MDT

Im the best, ( if there was composite ) :_(
