6th, edit: technically I'm 3rd!!

by Jedidawn on 2006-07-23 15:42 MDT

Lol, TD's necro deck is illigal. He has misplaced one of his power sinks to the MD, resulting in a 14 card sideboard. And yet he t8ed with it?

by Eliminator on 2006-07-23 16:04 MDT

This trial was a huge disappointment for Team GRAH. We had a finely tuned, ready to roar Necro deck that got tripped up in the early rounds. Mr. Splooge got ass lucky. He mulled to 5, yet he FOW'd my turn 1 Necro and I got bad draws while he got more counters. Fuck Magic.

by TypeONegativ on 2006-07-23 16:15 MDT

Yah, I also had A LOT of luck. Please don't netdeck my deck if this horrendous format is ever played again, cus it's pretty bad =/

Otoh, besides necro and fow, IA in general is pretty bad, so I guess that makes up for it :D

by Tinefol on 2006-07-23 16:27 MDT

I played John Finkel's deck and guess what, I lost to some horrible necro packing aggro :)

by TD on 2006-07-23 16:47 MDT

Lol, TD's necro deck is illigal. He has misplaced one of his power sinks to the MD, resulting in a 14 card sideboard. And yet he t8ed with it?

Oh brillant, you're right. :P Bah. Though I'm not sure what the penalty for that is... probably a GL, and I'd have a basic land as my 15th SB slot I think.

Oh well, time to fix it for the next time. I'd highly recommend my deck, by the way (but, you know, legal), but I'd consider running some mana-fixing lands and cutting a lake; perhaps running painlands (though honestly, they kind of hurt in necro as you want all the cards you can get). FoW + Necro is broken. Oh, and the specters suck; I'd cut them for something better (like, say, power sinks from the SB). That'd allow you to run an extra dystopia, which came in quite a bit and proved quite handy, and maybe some other stuff.

by TD on 2006-07-23 16:49 MDT

BTW, the error wasn't the Power Sink sliding in from the SB, it was a specter sliding in from the SB (there were only supposed to be 3 MD). I'm so glad all my teammates pointed it out to be, too, before the tournament. And by pointed out, I mean "They didn't notice either". Of course, I was really playing at a disadvantage with a 61 card deck and less sideboarding ability, but meh. Hope nothing bad happens. Too bad not even the TC noticed when he played against me.

by TD on 2006-07-23 17:15 MDT

I talked to Shyft (the TC) about it, he was my SF opponent. He said that because no one (including him) noticed it and reported it that it is too late to do anything about it. Sorry guys. At least it was a strictly worse than legal deck, instead of, say, better :P

by Spooge on 2006-07-23 18:52 MDT

Eliminator quit ur bitching in our match i mulled to 5 once and still beat u then mulled to 6 and beat u again so dont type such bs. But the greatest match of the tourney was the semi's with me and type 0 negetive game one he mulls to 5 and i mull to six game two i mull to 6 again and he stays and final game i mull to 5 again and he mulls to six i think it was the most amount of mulls ive seen in a single match ;).

by Eliminator on 2006-07-23 20:25 MDT

Go to hell. You shouldn't have won, but I kept drawing lands and I had 21 lands in the deck. Necro > MUC and Necro > UW

by TD on 2006-07-23 20:56 MDT

Necro is great, but only if you're good enough to play it properly.

by STiL on 2006-07-23 20:57 MDT

Oh shit, someone get the wahmbulance to this thread stat!

by Spartacus on 2006-07-23 21:26 MDT

My deck is very better then those, but I didn't participate in this trial cuz I was buzy. Unfortunately, It will be the last Ice age block trial I think....

by Spooge on 2006-07-23 21:58 MDT

Eliminator u still dont get the point quite ur bitching i mulled down to 5 and then to 6 in both our games and still beat u ...

by sui_slush on 2006-07-23 23:13 MDT

No, the point is elim's deck is the best possible deck you can build with the card pool available in ice age block, period.

by TD on 2006-07-23 23:49 MDT

Then why did he scrub out round 1 to FoW? Because FoW owns you if you're trying to necro out quickly. Is your deck actually good if you don't get necro down? If not, then maybe your deck has a problem. I know I FoWed a necro or two during my only match with necro and it helped seal that match; I suspect that people successfully built good enough necro hosers that you guys lost due to their builds. Note that I had the only necro deck in the T4, and that two of the T4 decks were necro hosers. And my own deck was built to beat other necro decks; it was one of my primary concerns.

Besides, FoW is rediculous; why run Necro OR FoW when you can run both in a two color deck?

It'd be nice if there was another Ice Age block constructed something; I thought it was fun. Even if it was just a mini. It was good times and was interesting to play with Consultation and Necropotence again in a deck where you didn't just lay down Necro and instantly combo out that turn.

I don't think necro is the only viable deck; I think UB necro is the best, but I'm sure its beatable. I certainly lost in the finals, through a combination of ineptitude, bad draws, and facing a deck which hosed necro; without a combo to go off with instantly, the deck is vulnerable.

by ChristPunchr on 2006-07-24 00:08 MDT

I was a big fan of lakedrain but then again that deck had hymn and mind twist for people that played FoW. There are no thawing glaciers in this top four, which amazes me.

I guess necro decks need counterspell to deal with necro hate.

by Lunarvoltage on 2006-07-24 02:02 MDT

Punchr, Thawing Glaciers was banned in the tournament. Maybe that could be the reason..?

by TypeONegativ on 2006-07-24 05:47 MDT

"If our deck doesn't win the trial it'll be a miracle"
"Best possible deck out of the card pool"
"Necro> (insert random deck here)"

Guys, please wake up. Your deck didn't even TOP 4. Even IF it would be the best possible deck, you could be fairly sure it would get meta-ed against, and that happened. Even though my deck may not be the best possible build from the card pool (3 ronom hulks? Only 3 Ants? I was really doing something wrong there when I build the deck in the afternoon), the point is it can very well win against necro (I beated it 3 times, 1 was real close tho) and has pretty good matchups against the rest of the field.

by TypeONegativ on 2006-07-24 06:04 MDT

And Spooge, I dont think we had so much mulling, aa far as I can remember, it was me mulling to 5 g1, you stayed at 7, g2 vice versa because you drew a card too much in your first mulligan, and g3 we both mulled to 6 I believe. I'm fairly sure you didn't mull to 5 in g3 at least.

by NahHolmes on 2006-07-24 10:03 MDT

Necro is not that great at all. I tested with it and was very unimpressed. I think the Baubles really were a terrible idea in the deck but w/e. My friend made a deck kinda like the 1st place deck except with more LD and waxed my ass hard but I like UW control so I just rolled with it and lost to the mirror on account of no Mouth of Romon's for me and me talking to my friend the whole time our match was going on and playing terribly even though I probobaly should have won if I had been playing correctly. Anyways point is Necro is not that great too bad there isn't another Ice Age Block coming up :( I would love to run that back.

by TD on 2006-07-24 10:49 MDT

I think old necro isn't that wonderful; it was a lot better back in the day, but now that people have gotten better at building decks (and playing) it isn't as good. As for finely tuning a deck... how can you finely tune it when you have nothing to test it against?

by NahHolmes on 2006-07-24 13:15 MDT

They all built Necro decks so necro won every game, LOL. Seriously though Necro was good back in the day because it was in rotation with cards like Hymn to Tourach, Hypnotic Specter, Drain Life, Masticore, Yawg Will, Illusions/Donate, Ivory Tower and other such nastiness that Necro decks thrive on. In Ice Age Block it is sufficently less broken. The lack of abilities that neuter an opponents hand, lackluster win conditions, and lack of brokenness that is Yawg Will or Illusion/Donate make it not as great as it would seem to be.

by TD on 2006-07-24 13:43 MDT

That is true to a degree, but it was supposedly good in block back in the day. However, it didn't dominate block, which is why it was never banned in it.

by AlexTrebek on 2006-07-30 16:16 MDT

I'm suprised Counterpost didn't make a big splash since it gained a board sweeper...
