Interview with Rawrespada4 Aether Revolt Sealed MASTERS

Written by derflippi on February 20, 2017

Rawrespada4 won the Aether Revolt Sealed MASTERs on February 19th. The tournament had 25 players, thus 5 rounds of Swiss followed by a Top8 Boosterdraft.

After the finals, derflippi conducted an interview with the winner for our magic-league coverage. The interview was slightly edited afterwards.

derflippi
Rawrespada, you just won a MASTERs as your first magic-league tournament, without losing a match. Congratulations.
How did you find out about the tournament and what expectations did you have when joining?

RawrEspada4
Thank you, as far as how I found out I was just hanging out in the main lobby when you posted an advert for the tournament. I figured I wasn't doing anything else today so might as well play some Sealed. As for expectations, I was just looking for some good sealed matches. I didn't even really expect to get to the draft portion.
derflippi
There's also daily TRIALs where the winner wins a round-1-Bye for the nextof the biweekly MASTERs. Do you plan playing one of those in the future?
RawrEspada4
If I'm on when they are being hosted, no reason not to. Would sure make the swiss a little less nerve wrecking.
derflippi
Now about this tournament. You mentioned at some point your Sealed pool wasn't very good. What decisions did you have to make during the deckbuilding process of Sealed?
RawrEspada4
Well none of my colors were that deep to begin with. But to top that off my rares were also on the weak end, with Planar Bridge and Secret Salvage being the worst among them. I ended up in BG energy though with a Glint-Sleeve Siphoner (the one rare in the deck) and a couple Tigers as the pay off.
derflippi
Any card you were unexpectedly impressed throughout the Swiss portion of the event?
RawrEspada4
Honestly Glint-Sleeve Siphoner did more than its fair share. Other than that though I guess Prey Upon. Turns out it's pretty decce with a bunch of cheap deathtouch creatures.

derflippi
Glint-Sleeve Siphoner, interesting. Where there particular cards you sideboarded in?
RawrEspada4
Take Down, the third Prey Upon and a couple of times a Fen Hauler. Fen Hauler had to be hard cast for the full 7 but it was my "tech" against decks with heavy servo output.
derflippi
After 5 wins, you drafted in the Top8. When did you decide to go with Green-Black, the deck you ended up with during the draft, what were the key picks for that?
RawrEspada4
I ended up in Green-Black about pick 4 of pack 1, although at that point I was still open to maybe shifting black for something else. I started on some solid green picks with packs that were light on other green playables. Pack 1 pick 1 I grabbed the Ridgescale Tusker over a foil Inspiring Statuary and an Exquisite Archangel. And Pick 2 was Lifecrafter's Gift. Following that with a Bandar and then the Snek I was pretty much locked into counters.

derflippi
If you had to chose, do you pick Ridgescale Tusker or Untethere Express as your first pick?
RawrEspada4
I love Tusker, I do. It's almost a Verdurous Gearhulk (sometimes it's even better!) which is insane. But as much as I love the Tusker, Untethered Express keeps me open going forward and will see play no matter what colors I end up in so that's the pick but man it would be a tough one.
derflippi
That's what others have said, too. Is there anything else you'd like to say?
RawrEspada4
Well I guess I'd like to thank the tournament organizer and Magic-League.com but also everyone else that played in the Master event. Almost all my matches went to three games and were closely fought and that's what I was looking for when I signed up for the event.
derflippi
Awesome. Once again, thank you for the interview and congratulations on winning the Aether Revolt Sealed MASTERs.
