PTQ Hollywood *Winner* (again…)

by Kev

It all starts a few weeks ago when I was trolling the Magic-league.com- site once again and stumbled upon a sample DC-rock list. I started playing with a bit. It seemed so underwhelming on paper, but when I started playing with it, I found out it was actually really powerful. Tweaking it, I found out the deck could beat any other deck if you just kept in mind what cards are in important in certain matches.
First thing I did though was cut the Tarmogoyfs from the deck since they don’t interact with the deck very well. You have better ways to defend yourself against aggro decks, better kill cards versus NLB, and you don’t need a clock versus combo but a fast Cloud (which is your clock if you want it to be). For a better long game I added an Eternal Witness, which was mainly there to be fetched out with Primal Command after boarding, but could also be useful to fetch with Liliana when you are out of Smothers or discard and you needed either pretty bad. The other addition I quickly made was adding the 2 Damnation. A playset of Pernicious Deeds just wasn’t cutting it against aggro decks game one. It also helped to have another hard to Counterbalance card against NLB when they open with a quick Goyf.
In the Board I put cards against the bad matchups which are all sorts of Aggrodecks with Burn. Primal Command was soon to be found to be the proper card here. A seven point life swing into Witness, into another Command into Baloth was almost impossible for these decks to beat and thus it became apparent those slots where filled. Since Primal Command couldn’t beat Sulfuric Vortex, I also added some Stomphowlers, they are good versus Ideal and against aggro as they can be sacked to Baloth for another 4 life. Kind of useful… For the rest I added more cards that would be nice to have more of so matches would be easier, except the lone Echoes, this was just another ‘I win’-card versus NLB.

Obviously I got wasted again before the tournament because it worked so well last time.  When I woke up early on Friday afternoon I didn’t notice anything from my party hours the night before. I was tired and had no lust to do anything, but no hangover whatsoever. Luckily there were no plans on my agenda the whole day so I chilled all day long, but at the end of the day I was getting tired as hell… When the clock reached 2am I decided it was time for bed, but not before some small drinks to get me to sleep easier. It is so weird how I didn’t feel wasted at all that day, but was so extremely tired when I went to bed.

I made sure my serotonin levels would be extremely high on Thursday night so my levels would be down to normal levels on Saturday, which would make me feel depressed and wasted, the perfect mind setting for a PTQ. Somehow I do well at tournaments when I’m not at my best, this time would hopefully be no exception. I really love it when people stress in their articles that you have to sleep properly and need to have a proper breakfast, etcetera. But for me the best thing is to maximize my chill time and get less then the basic hours of sleep needed together with some croissants, fruit juice and maybe bananas or something. That makes me feel king of the world, I am a bit tired, a state in which I’m the best trash-talker in the world and I do not even feel hungry because I did have proper breakfast. Too bad I didn’t eat anything else that day…

On Saturday I obviously feel my head hurt from the drinks last night, but it’s not that bad that I have to call off the PTQ. Arjan rings me to make sure I arrive on time at the train and to tell me he reserved a spot for me. At this moment I am not too happy to see his face, since I really want to sleep but I know he is all chattery and will do his best to make sure that I will never ever get a minutes rest before we arrive in Utrecht…

Round 1 Zoo
So, round 1 starts and I’m not feeling too well and it shows in my plays. I keep a slow hand on the draw, which contains a Smother, a Deed, an Overgrown Tomb and a bounceland. Obviously my opponent is playing Zoo and punishes my bad skills by Vindicating my bounceland. I don’t draw another non-bounceland and horribly lose game 1.
Game 2 I’m on the play and keep a strong hand for the aggro matchup with 2 smothers and a Damnation. I Smother his t2 Confidant and when he lays 3 Creatures the next turn I Damnation his hopes away. When I get up to 7 mana he has 4 cards in hand and 4 lands in play. DC for the win.
In game 3 I show that I am a hard learner. Some people say that even a donkey doesn’t trip over the same stone twice. I keep an identical hand to game 1 and my opponent makes me pay for it when he plays turn 3 Vindicate that he flipped of his Dark Confidant. I don’t see another land in sight for the next 3 turns and lose horrible because of my own mistakes.

Interlude 1: The match was done within reasonable time so I started looking at other matches. When I drop down at a match that has Dredge versus Doran in it I notice a procedural error when the Dredge player wants to remove his Bridge form below when his opponent pops a Deed. He forgot that he had a Leyline in play so his opponent's cards can never trigger his Bridges. I call a judge on it and ask them to stop. The Dredge player is visibly frustrated, but I do not understand why. It only costs him a warning and he even gets to keep his Bridge, when the judge left he starts talking to bystanders how I rules-lawyerd him into a warning.  In my opinion, the kid should stop bitching and should start learning his own deck. It is not like this is an FNM, You're playing for the marbles, not for the game. If you want to make mistakes don’t play in a PTQ. The kid tells to shut up and I am like ‘whatever.' I turn around and start watching Arjan’s match. Afterwards I go and sit in my chair for round 2 and who do I see? The Doran player from round one that played versus the Dredge kid. He tells me that he didn’t mind that I called a judge on their match as he wants to get better at the game. I know that I will never forgive myself when I lose this match; he is obviously not a very good player or he would’ve noticed the Leyline… End Interlude 1.

Round 2 Doran
Luckily for me things start well, as a judge comes over to the table to tell my opponent he only registered 59 cards so we go to game 2 with a 1-0 lead my way. Game 2 he mulls to 5. I beat his face in as he doesn’t do anything at all the whole game and I drop a turn3 Garruk into turn 4 Death Cloud for his board.

Round 3 Affinity
I don’t recognize my opponent, which is usually a good thing at Dutch PTQs. I put him on Dredge for some reason but he flips over a Great Furnace and goes like ‘of all cards I obviously have to show that one! This tells me he doesn’t play the red burn deck but Ravager. I keep a hand that can go for a quick Deed and had Damnation as backup. At one point he sacs most of his board to make a big Nexus so that my Damnation won’t be as affective. I Damnation with 2 mana up, after I used Liliana to put a Smother on top, with a Sensei’s Top in play.  When I later Deed when he is out of red mana all he has left is the Nexus and another card. I have DI mana and start searching out Baloth’s to quickly kill him and keep the Smother backup all the time.
In game 2 he starts and goes nuts, he drops turn 1 double Frog and plays turn 2 Plating bash for 9. I can't find a Sakura so I horribly die with a Damnation and Pernicious Deed in hand.
Game 3 I open with a Duress and take away a Springleaf Drum to make sure he can’t go nuts turn 1. His plating does make it into play and it connects once. Then I play deed and he is out of gas. When I drop Garruk things go my way very fast but I’m low on life and he still has the opportunity to blast me out of the game if I play Death Cloud. I putrefy his only red source…

PS. DC you

Round 4 Boros
He opens game one very strong with an Isamaru into Legionnaire. He applies the beats quickly and gives me little room for error. The turn before I lose I have the option of looking with my Top for both a land that comes into play untapped but I draw Golgari Rot Farm. Now I have to get lucky with top but I do not draw the Damnation that could save me.
Now I finally am able to show the sick power of Primal Command. In the early game my opponent gets stuck on two lands. When I drop a turn 4 Baloth he burns it which costs him too much tempo as his only threat is also one now. I drop Liliana and fetch the Green Command. He drops a dude and says go. I use Liliana to fetch another Command and put a land on top of his library as he is still stuck on two lands. When I play another Command next turn netting me a Witness my opponent isn’t looking so happy anymore. I drop Liliana again and end the game with a Death Cloud.
Game 3 I play a turn 3 Damnation on his Goblin Legionnaire and Isamaru. When I drop a turn 4 Liliana again he sees the problems coming. 1 Command into Witness into Command again is too much for him to overcome though and he concedes when I Death Cloud the Board away with my life total very high in the double digits.
PS. PC me
Round 5 Doran
This guy just never really gets off the ground and I beat him quite easily. He never really has pressure in any of the games and I just beat his face in with Beast Tokens after I Death Cloud.
Game 2 goes the same. This looks pretty boring and it was. No hard choices to make, no exceptional good plays. Just happened this way and probably 90% of the people would’ve done the same plays as me thus I do not feel like typing out all the plays, because my time is worth too much to write some boring story that only 10% of the people will benefit from.

Round 6 Mono Red Burn
Right, 5-1 after 6 rounds means draw into top 8, obviously I’m paired against my worst matchup… He does what he is supposed to do and wrecks me game one as I don’t draw infinite Baloths to keep him out of the game. Game 2 I am on the play and mulligan away two slow hands without Baloths. My hand has Thoughtseize, Baloth and three lands, how lucky indeed. I Thoughtseize a Shrapnel Blast away.
–Interlude 2, In this matchup you have to keep around all of your discard, because although Thoughtseize makes you lose two life, the expected value is still positive, as the card you will snatch away will always, and with always I do mean ALWAYS, give you more damage then the thoughtseize would cost you. Besides, it is not like you want to keep your damnations or all of your plainswalkers in your deck. End Interlude 2 –
I cast a Baloth and somehow stabilize at seven life or so. I find a Liliana and fetch two green commands in consecutive turns. He has a window in one turn where he can topdeck a land or a burnspell that does two to the dome, or one dmg for one mana cause then he can activate Blinkmoth Nexus for the win, which means he can draw literally ALL cards in his deck except Keldon Marauders. Having a little angel fly above me my opponent obviously topdecks the Marauders. So I survive, put his Nexus on top, gain seven life, beat his face in with Baloths and eventually I am in the clear when I can make Garruk tokens to gain DI life. This guy dealt 35+ damage this game and somehow I still survived. o_0
Game three he keeps a questionable hand as he told me afterwards as it was low on lands. When I have four basic lands on turn four he molten rains me to keep me of Primal Command and Liliana mana. I obviously have the bounceland in hand that I slowrolled to not get wrecked by Land Destruction again, thank you very much round one opponent. So I get immediately back in the game and when I go Green Command into Witness into Green Command into Baloth he realizes he isn’t going to kill me anymore and concedes.
Round 7 NLB
With the amount of 12-pointers I’m not entirely sure to be in the top 8 with my breakers so I decide to play, although I really, really want to draw since my opponent is playing NLB and a NLB player in the top 8 is like a bye, which gets me that much closer to Hollywood. I ask my friend who is 5-0-1 to play against his 5-1 opponent so that I can draw in for sure when he wins. He obviously loses which means he gets fewer packs (which are split by Swiss Standings in the Netherlands). But it doesn’t matter, the 12-pointers with low win percentage come out of the round victorious and thus I can still draw in anyway…
Woohoo top 8, 4 packs o_0

What is it with these Dutch tourneys? 100 players, 15 euros each (at current rate that is $22+) and not even half a box for t8? These people are soooooooooo greedy.
Quarters NLB
So obviously I’m paired against the only decent player left in the tournament, Jelger Wiegersma. Always nice to see people can profit from policy changes, but please, do not make me play against these people, since they are so much better than me. It’s a decent matchup though... I throw away game one when I forget to take a Miren, the Moaning Well into account. He got lucky though since he flipped the Vedalken Shackles with his Counterbalance to counter my Pernicous Deed when he was tapped out after a shuffle. The Deed would’ve ended that game without too much troubles as it would put Garruk back online.
Game two he keeps a questionable hand as I see after I Thoughtseize him. He doesn’t have any good early plays. When he topdecks a second Tarmogoyf he plays it on turn one. It beats me three turns for 3 a piece before I find a Pernicious Deed. I pop the Deed and he only has two lands left after that. Without a Top he has totally nothing left and I just Death Cloud the board for the win. At this moment I get a bit more secure about the outcome again.
Game three he keeps another questionable hand and I tell him it is very bad since he cannot win the matchup without Top. He has Mox, and Trinket Mage in hand and does the dreaded play of turn two trinket Mage find Top. He is unable to play it though. I am very happy with this as I have a Duress in my hand that I didn’t want to use immediately, since I didn’t need to force anything through just yet. When I use my Top during my upkeep I see another Duress lying on top. I Duress the first time and only see a Counterspell and Cryptic Command next to his Top and another land. I get rid of the Top and Duress him again next turn which gets Counterspelled. When I Smother Trinket Mage he only has Cryptic Command left. I play some test spells to get rid of the Command and eventually I am able to land a Garruk, after which I Death Cloud for almost the entire board. He extends the hand instead of playing on for a few more turns.
Semi’s Doran
So I’m out to play for the marbles now, and a teched version of Doran is my last obstacle to glory. The guy playing me is celebrating his birthday today… Game one he gets a quick draw but I am able to Damnation some stuff away and stabilize, we get into topdecking but I don’t have a Top so it is kinda even. At a moment in the game I topdeck my first Deed and pop it for his Doran, he draws and passes, I topdeck another Deed and play it, thinking that it is way more likely that he drew a discard spell then his last copy of Vindicate. Obviously he drew Vindicate and passes after killing my deed o_0 I draw a land and pass to which he plays a Goyf and I draw my third Deed in four cards and get rid of his Goyf. After that its anticlimactic as I keep drawing threats and he starts drawing lands.
Game 2 he starts slow with no 1 drop. I play Thoughtseize to see a slow hadnd of three land, Doran, Hierarch, Chameleon Colossus. I get rid of the Collussus because I have Smother in hand and Hierarch isn’t a threat versus me really. He draws and I play another Thoughtseize to see he ripped a Vindicate from the top. I get rid of it. We trade cards for a while until I start working my top to get into a better position. I cannot seem to get any action going though, all my top coughs up is more shuffle effects. He draws into Treetop Villages and Jitte and starts going to town with it. I play a defensive Cloud so he cannot attack and equip anymore. When he topdecks his fifth land again he doesn’t attack with the Treetop Village for some reason, but Living Wishes for a Witness and gets back a Vindicate. I obviously topdeck another Cloud and get rid of the board and all the cards he played last turn. After that I keep topdecking like mad with Garruk into Liliana. He concedes when I have enough Beast tokens for insane smashery!

And now I’m off to Hollywood, anyone got a place near the site where I can crash?

As a final note I would like to say that I would change some things to the deck with the changing format coming out of GP Vancouver. With there probably being less Counterbalance decks, but more decks with 6+ hard counters in the main deck it is probably wise to play Boseiju, Who Shelters All in the sideboard so you can be sure that when you want to resolves spells you will be able to. Be careful with it though, since the cost is hefty. I would probably take the gamble and remove all the Dredge hate from the sideboard and cross my fingers I wouldn’t face it or hope you can get lucky and face a player that isn’t very good with the deck so you can use Sakura and Baloth to remove the bridges when they go off and then use Death Cloud for a problematic Akroma or Baloth in multiples to keep blocking those Ichorids.

The matchup versus Goblins is probably not too bad but some Engineered Plague in your sideboard probably wouldn’t harm you. This because a topdecked Patriarch’s Bidding is still a loss. Damnation is good but cannot prevent this from happening. Next to that I can tell you that there should be room made for an additional Primal Command. This card is very, very strong in the current format. It is good versus the aggro decks for the obvious life gain and against control it gives you a double time walk when you can find a witness with it. Even with some acceleration it might be good enough against Ideal to put a land on top of their deck. There should probably be one copy in the maindeck instead of Liliana Vess, a card I was content with all day, but felt slow at times.

im playing this deck a ptq rochester and since i first started playing it i also cut tarmo(Bc i had the same feeling about him in the deck as you do).and i replaced them for eternal witness also.
i also only run 1 Bounce land bc im so afraid of having it vindicated of moulten rained usually sets you so far back you almost awlys lose. ive thought of using primal command but i awlys thought you might die b4 being able to abuse it. after reading you artical i will test it.
~Congrats on your win~

Um, Why can't primal command deal with vortex?

well although it did good on M-L it didn't really top 8 PTQs much.

do you reckon its worth it spending like around $200 USD to go to another city to attend PTQ Hollywood(this incl flights entry fees food etc not accom)

Very nice article mate.
I felt kinda sorry about vindicating that rot farm again in game 3 but that's the big risk with rot farm in a format with lots of molten rains and some vindicates.
Glad you never got to primal command shenanigans against me.

I also made top 8 (3rd place, 12 packs) with:

// Lands
1 [GP] Steam Vents
4 [ON] Wooded Foothills
4 [ON] Windswept Heath
1 [RAV] Temple Garden
1 [GP] Stomping Ground
1 [DIS] Blood Crypt

1 [RAV] Overgrown Tomb
1 [UNH] Mountain
1 [GP] Godless Shrine
4 [ON] Bloodstained Mire

// Creatures
3 [CHK] Isamaru, Hound of Konda
4 [AN] Kird Ape
4 [TO] Grim Lavamancer
4 [TE] Mogg Fanatic
2 [FUT] Tarmogoyf
4 [RAV] Dark Confidant
2 [CS] Jotun Grunt (too poor for more goyfs)

// Spells
4 [AP] Vindicate
4 [IN] Tribal Flames
4 [RAV] Lightning Helix
2 [BOK] Umezawa's Jitte
3 [PS] Terminate (allstars)

SB: 4 [TSB] Tormod's Crypt
SB: 1 [LRW] Gaddock Teeq
SB: 3 [SOK] Pithing Needle

R1: Death Cloud (see article)

R2: TEPS
He's made an error with his decklist so i'm up 1-0.
Game 2 he plays some saclands while I play kird ape and some more dudes. He's on 14 as he goes off on turn 3 (in fear of molten rain). I only have terminate in hand so I think i'm screwed but his combo fizzles after mind's desire for 5 and lots of chromatic stars he has two infernal tutors, a land and one other card in hand. He can't ever get hellbent, and all of a sudden he plays tombstalker! That's actually quite a nice suprise but obviously I terminate it and swing twice for the win.

R3: Dredge
He reveals a breakthrough while shuffling and goes on to talk a bit about how broken his deck is. Game one I don't have a fanatic but decide to keep a decent six card hand. He is on the play and kills me on turn 3 after dredging 2 bridges on turn 2.
I side my 4 crypts but don't draw into them. I decide not to mull further then 6 because I have fanatic this time. A well timed fanatic buys me lots of time, removing 3 bridges. He's got dredgers but no discard outlets as I killed his imp with lavamancer. I get quite a beatdown going and burn him out.
G3 I slow him with fanatic early and get working on his life totals as he does nothing for a couple of turns (no discard outlet again I guess).
The turn before I kill him he finds breakthrough and is able to dredge quite some cards but doesn't find any narcomoeba's. I swing for the win.
Winning against dredge with only fanatic is not quite what I expected but hey: i'm not complaining.

R4: Tarmoburn
This is an interesting matchup. I take much more damage from lands (if you didn't know it yet, on average you hit yourself for 10 life during a game) but my burnspells are quite a lot better. Terminate for his goyfs helps as well.
We both start off with a kird ape, and I follow with a dark confidant but it gets lava darted. We beat each other for a bit, and i'm getting ready to vindicate his kird ape, but then he tries to save life by fetching a basic mountain with his second foothills. I vindicate his stomping ground and get ahead in the race against his 1/1 ape. He lavadarts some more of my dudes but he's stuck on mountain + barbarian ring and eventually I burn him out with helix.
Game two he starts with lavamancer, which I fanatic. Then I cast turn 2 jotun grunt, as 4 damage for 2 and hopefully more. He get some seal of fire's going and I lay another lavamancer, and swing for 4. He decides he wants to get rid of my grim before it's active so he seals it, giving my grunt another turn (8 damage for 1W is pretty awesome). Unfortunately I start drawing quite some lands from here, having no less then 7 lands in play when I die (didn't miss a single land drop this game...yay)
Game 3 he doesn't get any creatures in play except his fanatic which trades with my isamaru. While I beat him down he rift bolts me twice and i've taken 7 of my lands so i'm down to 7 life and I get him on 3 as he lava darts my only remaining creature. He plays double seal of fire, so i'm virtually on 3 as well, and we both play topdeck from here. After one land I draw lighting helix for the win.

R5: Doran
Winning this would guarantee a spot in T8. I put terminates maindeck mostly for this matchup, and they were really awesome. I don't remember how the games went exactly but mostly I played some early guys, killed his early fatties with terminate/vindicate and was able to keep attacking him, getting him low enough to burn him out. Jitte was also very scary to him and I didn't see many hierarchs.

R6: ID
R7: ID

Quarter finals: NLB
This was the round of the mulligans. He start by mulling down to 4 and I get my hopes up for an easy victory. My opening 7 are: 3 lands, vindicate, helix, helix, tribal flames. Dang no creatures, this would be the kind of hand that would allow him to get back into the game. One kird ape would have done the trick but oh well, I throw them back. In my 6 and 5 card hands I don't see any lands at all so i'm forced to keep land land fanatic terminate. His hand was top, land, fetch and something, which was the nuts compared to mine. He gets to look at lots of cards with the top and quickly establishes board control.
Game two he mulls to 5 and I mull to 6. I come blazing out of the gates dropping lots of threats early. He trinket mages for explosives but I have the needle ready in my hand. I lavamancer his mage and keep red zoning. He taps out for two tarmogoyfs in a desperate defensive attempt. I draw tribal flames of my confidant and see he's at 7. Flames for 5 giving me a second card for lavamancer seals the deal.
Game 3 I keep an awesome hand consisting of 2 lands, kird ape, fanatic, confidant, vindicate, pithing needle. He mulls to five so i'm feeling good about this. Unfortunately his hand contained triple force spike and he's on the play. My kird ape, confidant, and vindicate (he was stuck on two lands, this would be a major blow) all get countered. He admits he's very lucky. However i'm not out of it because of the needle which I put on his top after he trinkets for it, and my fanatic is racing his mage. I drop to 5 and am forced to cast terminate on the mage. He then gets a 4/5 goyf while I get a jitte on my mogg with 2 counters. I attack, hoping he would block but he doesn't. He has just wished for stomphowler so I know my jitte is going down next turn. With four counters and the fanatic I attempt to kill the goyf but he has thirst for knowledge in response adding another type so it's 5/6. I could've gained 8 life instead but that would be kinda useless when you're staring down 9 power so I had to go for it.
I get some awesome topdecks now, first a terminate for the goyf into tribal flames for the stomphowler, into my own 6/7 goyf. He's got 6 mana and taps out for living wish into sower of temptation stealing mr T. One draw is all I have and he asked me to slam it craig jones style. he gets up from his chair but it's an epic failure as I slam down pithing needle ftl. I congratulate him and go home as a happy man. In the train I open two packs for some mental magic and I open a mutavault, yay!
Had some great fun with the deck. It's not got many very good matchups, but it's not got very bad ones either, it just does it's thing. The terminates we're really good and I'll definetely keep those in in the maindeck. Might wanna add some gaddock teeqs to the main/side when I get some money.

vs burn you probs wont have time to make that play. the whole point of primal command is to gain 7 life and find a baloth to gain more life. using command for something other then gaining life and finding a baloth is like losing 11 life.

Good job with the deck. I'm digging deathcloud and all but you write very pretentiously. When I read your article I can tell that
A) You want people to understand how easily you can win a PTQ, hungover or otherwise and
B) You are better at Magic than *me* (again).

by Weazle on 2008-03-02 03:34 MDT

actually, I JUST found this in an earlier post. He obviously writes with an equally emphatic yearning to have others think he's a bad ass (ie., try to write an entire article without proving how much you drank and still got the results you are reporting to the rest of us. And don't forget to spell check or at least get Firefox)

Good thing my phone Rang.
6) I like the current meta for ext. it has a wide Viarity of deck and Sb Options. im not sure what the meta will be like after rotation.

um did that red deckyou lost to round 6 or what not also make the t8?

by Kev on 2008-03-03 01:29 MDT

Misty, I won that match so it didn't make top8 as it was 4-2 after r6

by wisdomhappy on 2008-03-04 13:39 MDT

cloud is the best deck i told you all. I got flamed for telling people not to play it but I know you all wish people would have listened to me haha

the 2nd to last ptq i t8'd was during last year's extended season, and i did it while shooting up heroin twice during the swiss. then i lost in the top8 and they had to move top8 tables because i apparently got all pissy after losing to bad beats (2 resolved kataki's vs affinity gm3), and after i yelled a bit i passed out. i woke up with my friend who (thank god) is one of the head judges in the state i'm from. he told me that everyone but him voted call the cops when they couldn't wake me up after the tourney and cleanup ended. thank god (again), he carried me to his car, and waited 2 hours more for me to wake up. so then i slept in my car because i woke up puking (i drank a bunch of shots during my 2 id rounds, the hotel we were at had a bar next to the convention room). now it's over a year later and i'm on methadone trying to quit the intravenouses drug use. i'm so cool.
