Moving Forward

Written by Weedmonkey on July 23, 2014

This is going to be part-news about Magic-League, part-article. Since the information contained therein doesn't have the blessing of staff, consider this one staff member's view point and an article of the informational variety (because, you know, it's not like I've never done one of these before).

So, What Happened?

In the beginning, there were what I would call the Big Four: Koen, nico, Dirkjan-, and Alex. These four were responsible for giving birth to Magic-League and helping it take its first tender steps in the world. Over time, their involvement with the side gradually diminished; I personally hadn't seen much of Alex since 2004, and Dirkjan- since 2006. Koen also appeared to step back around 2006, although he may have been more involved behind the scenes at that point. From a personal standpoint, I had only ever really spoken to him twice: once when I first became staff in 2009, and then once at a staff meeting (at least, I think it was a staff meeting) a little later on after that.

nico has stuck around for a long time since, although with greatly diminished involvement with the site. After stepping down as Judge Director in 2004 or 2005, he was still somewhat involved for several years after that. However, as life has gone on nico has been less involved. It happens. It's not dereliction of duty, as responsibilities always have to be balanced with whatever goes on in a person's life; Erebos knows that I've stepped back somewhat as my life has taken the course it has and I've had less time to dedicate to M-L.

This is what led to nico selling the site.

Personally, I think nico should be commended for the sheer amount of dedication he's given to Magic-League over the years. A decade of dedication to one thing is a lot of work, and it's definitely not easy to come to terms with walking away from that when you can't put in the effort you want to.

With nico's departure, none of the original Big Four remain.

Oppo's Reign of Terror

(I kid, I kid)

As you are all no doubt aware by now, Oppo is the lucky lad to have picked up the website from nico. From my early interactions with him from an owner-staff perspective, I'm looking forward to working with Oppo.

By and large, things will be business as usual for the near future as Oppo eases into his new role as owner and gets the lay of the land. Things will no doubt change over time as the change in ownership becomes a catalyst for a potential revival push, but for the moment you can be safe in expecting that the site isn't going to become pink or we change the official language to Spanish (e-cookies to all of those who get those two references).

Where To From Here

The important thing I think for members to take away from this event is that ultimately, the strength of Magic-League has always been, and continues to be, the dedication that its members put in. The more people who want to get their hands dirty and do things, the better. There's a metric goat-ton of things to do on the site (and thanks to Oppo my own to-do list is now increasing daily *shakes fist*), and more people dedicating themselves to one goal is always better than a few working towards a goal and the rest heckling from the gantries.

So, take this short article with a grain of salt, and if you're wanting to chip in ask any one of our wonderful staff (or our dear leader). We'll do our best to get you doing something useful to help get this place back into shape.
