Canabiest

Name, age and nationality: Philipp Neitzel, 26, Germany

What deck are you playing and why? Naya Pod. I was unsure what to play and trusted my teammate Candace to make a good choice and coach me how to play it. Worked out.

What was the best play you made in this tournament? I raced a Mimic Vat with Huntmaster imprinted with Swords of War and Peace, Zealous Conscripts and at last a Bonfire of the Dammned.

What formats would you like to see hosted more frequently by judges on Magic-League? I like sealed usually. Drafts are nice too. But usually i find something to play in.

Which M13 card spoiled so far do you like the most? The Dragon Fodder with another name is something i look forward to use. Otherwise the Boar seems good too.

Do you have any thoughts about current Standard? Do you prefer any older one? Which one? It has gotten pretty stale and not much innovation left. I like Ravnica/Timespiral but that is the classic answer I guess. Felt like I could innovate there. But looking forward to change.

Anything else you'll like to add?

Candace

Name, age and nationality: Candace, 17, American.

What deck are you playing and why? I am playing Naya Aggro splashing Pod because I feel it is the best deck. I have played over 100 matches with it in this past week, it has a favourable matchup vs. Delver and is also quite strong against the rest of the field.

What was the best play you made in this tournament? Nothing flashy, but I used Zealous Conscripts to untap my Avacyn's Pilgrim to get in for an extra point of damage. My games were too short for any really good plays to happen.

What formats would you like to see hosted more frequently by judges in Magic-League? I like Standard.

Which M13 card spoiled so far do you like the most? I am a big fan of Thragtusk, he fits in Naya Pod perfectly and helps stabilise very well. So much value! Honourable mention to Thundermaw Hellkite.

Do you have any thoughts about current Standard? Do you prefer any older one? Which one? This is my favourite Standard format since I started playing 7 years ago. A couple of clear tier 1 decks but the tier 1 decks aren't so good that all of the other decks are not viable. The format is surprisingly diverse, despite all the Delver hype.

Anything else you'll like to add? This was the first "real" tournament I've ever participated in, with prize money and decent quantity + quality of players. As such, I'm very happy that I managed to top 8 it, with the #1 seed no less. Of course, I won't be truly satisfied unless I win it!

I lost in the quarterfinals due to a misplay that I learned quite a bit from. I had Borderland Ranger + a spell in hand, 5 lands in play. I ripped Copperline Gorge and slammed it down, then immediately realised I needed to play the untapped land from Ranger to play my other spell that turn, which would have won me the game and then the match. I've had this habit for a while but didn't think it would ever matter so I didn't correct it. Lessons: Always make sure you don't let little misplays slip by you just because they're very marginal, and don't slam cards off the top without thinking.

borderland ranger allows you to search only for basics...

by DonDiggy on 2012-07-02 09:43 CET

And reading allows you to not get things wrong. Candace obviously tutored for basic, but dropped down copperline gorge which she ripped (=drew) that turn.

by Candace on 2012-07-02 09:44 CET

Yes, yes it does. Basic lands come into play untapped. Copperline Gorge doesn't. What is your point?

by Kabelis on 2012-07-02 13:44 CET

At least I got mentioned twice in the "best play of the tournament" section.
