Type 2: Goblin Storm

Type 2: Goblin Storm

by MistyFatDog

INTRODUCTION
Magic-League has one of the biggest Standard deck metagames known to the Magic: The Gathering world.  There are a few that run to the top of the list such as UR Tron, Dragonstorm, Pickles/Dralnu, Gruul, and much more.  With such a vast amount of players, there are also many other decks that float around.  Most of these decks are rogues that do not do so well while others are different takes on tier one decks, most of which, don’t turn out as well as the original.

One such deck that I have been working on is Goblin Storm.  This deck is based off of TSPS (The Standard Perfect Storm), which runs two colors, black and red.  With black, you get some extra draw power such as Dark Confidant which also allows the deck to become an aggro deck with a combo in it.  In the past, this deck proved itself to be at the top of the meta.  There were other versions that popped up that ran green instead of black for a sideboarded Krosan Grip.  Yet, out of these versions and others, I chose to work on a Mono Red Goblin Storm.
My current decklist is as follows:
Goblin Storm
Main Deck Sideboard
20 Mountain
4 Wild Cantor
4 Greater Gargadon
4 Mogg War Marshal
3 Goblin King
3 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Empty the Warrens
4 Seething Song
4 Rite of Flame
2 Blood Moon
3 Ignite Memories
3 Rift Bolt
2 Fury of the Horde
1 Blood Moon
4 Sulfur Elemental
4 Seal of Fire
3 Ignorant Bliss
3 Fortune Thief

CARD CHOICES

Spells:

Rite of Flame - With this cards low mana cost, it is not that hard to get two and an Empty the Warrens off turn one with a storm count x3.

Seething Song - A major mana producer which against a counter deck can allow for a quick spell for mana to get through on the stack.

Empty the Warrens - The base and heart of the deck. A lot of people can handle a few creatures every turn and match them. Yet, in the early game, if you get 10+ creatures attacking each turn, it becomes pretty hard to stop.

Ignite Memories - The mana cost of this card is a little higher, thus taking away an easy turn 1 play. The up side is that against a deck like AngelFire, it becomes a new win condition instead of goblin tokens that fall short vs. Pyroclasm, Wrath of God, and Damnation.

Rift Bolt – Being able to suspend this card the turn before you go off can be immense.  It not only can deal damage to a player, but it can clear the field for your tokens that you may get.  Best of all, the turn you go off with it from suspend it is an extra spell for 0 mana.

Fury of the Horde – Ok, this card is downright special.  One late night, I was talking with Avatar_of_Kokusho and Haro.  Haro told me to try this card out.  I'll say that in testing it has proven to be amazing.  It allows me to win in a single turn; I will elaborate later in the article.

Creatures:

Greater Gargadon - With a combo deck, this may seem out of place. The suspend ability on this powerhouse is just downright amazing. With spells like Pyroclasm and other burn or removal standing in your creatures's way, this is a way out. Saccing each time can bring your finisher in play faster, only if needed.

Wild Cantor - From afar, it may seem like a 'Why would you even bother?' type of card. When you look more closely though, you see that with such a low casting cost and not taking a mana away, this card becomes very powerful. Add this to an early set of Rite of Flame turn one, and you get two more Goblin tokens.

Mogg War Marshal - For a 1/1, this has to be the best little creature in the deck. Not often will you pay the echo cost. If your Greater Gargadon is suspended, you can sac your marshal to him and get another counter removed, AND get a Goblin Token.

Goblin King - Get a ton of 2/2 Goblins? I think YES! A little known fact too is that since 9th edition, the creature type of Goblin King is Goblin Lord, which means if you have two, they give each other a bonus.
Simian Spirit Guide – There may be a once in a blue moon time that this card will be hardcasted.  It is great tech because it allows you to remove it from the game and add one mana to your pool which is the difference between a Empty the Warrens compared to a Ignite Memories.

Enchantments:

Blood Moon - There used to be more in this deck, but recently moved to side board. Mixed with Goblin King, your Goblins become amazing with the heavy Shock Land, Pain Land, and tron meta there is.

Sideboard:

Sulfur Elemental - With control having the ability to be a hard match up if playing correctly, a creature that can't be stopped coming into play is another in field problem they have to deal with, along with your combo.

Fortune Thief – This is actually a win condition vs. a couple decks in the format.  Playing against Mono Green Aggro, G/W Glare, or other decks that can not point or mass kill creatures.  Their worship or circle of protection becomes worthless.  Hopefully they will deck from harmonize or other such deck thinning cards.

Seal of Fire - Against those pesky aggro decks that run a lot of creatures, this is your way of clearing house to keep you alive for a few more turns, up the storm count while laying protection for your Goblins, or just removing potential blockers.

Ignorant Bliss - Running a mono colored deck can be a major risk. With black decks running discard such as Persecute and other discarding spells, it becomes very important to keep your combo pieces in hand. This allows you to do so, WHILE being able to draw a card to help your cause.

Blood Moon - As stated before, this shuts down so much. Yes there are still signets floating around but it is a lot better to play decks such as Tron with 1-3 colored sources compared to a bunch + tron lands.

TESTING

U/R Dragon Storm:
This is one of the harder match ups.  With the capability to play Remand to stop your combo and then deal lethal damage the next turn, Dragonstorm is tough. A plus side is that if you are able to get off ignite memories, with Dragonstorm and Bogarden Hellkites having such a high mana cost, you may get really lucky.  It all comes down to who can go off the soonest without interruption.
Sideboard:
Out
2x Blood Moon
In
2x Seal of Fire
Reason
There is currently nothing you can sideboard against Dragonstorm.  Just hope you can outrace them.  That change is just to remove a dead card for a potential storm enhancer.

R/G Gruul:
This becomes a much easier match up.  You need to rely on getting a higher count Empty the Warrens because Gruul will not run Pyroclasm with all the little creatures they run.  There is burn though which can be a problem and your ignite memories wont be as effective against their low mana count deck.  Just over run them and you should be fine.
Sideboard:
Out
2x Blood Moon
2x Ignite Memories
In
4x Seal of Fire
Reason
As stated before, there is a low mana count and the deck already relies on red.  Adding Seal of Fires will allow you to get rid of a quite a few of their creatures that makes the deck very aggro.

U/R Tron:
Depending on the build, this can become a semi easy match up.  The main deck Blood Moons are a great addition at this point.  This can prevent a lot, even if they are able to get out an Izzet Signet or two, it greatly lowers the amount of blue spells they can play in a turn.  Also, there is not much mass removal you will walk into, unless you are unlucky to run into a version with Wildfires.  With the ability to go off for many turns without resistance except an occasional Remand, this deck becomes a very good match up.
Sideboard:
Out
-1 Rift Bolt
In
+1 Blood Moon
Reason
Blood Moon really puts a stopper on this deck compared to a burn card that will not touch any creatures ran by this deck.

Pickles/Dralnu:
I put these together since it is basically the control match up.  This can become one of, if not the hardest match up you will have.  Against a smart and good control player, they can shut down your combo with a well placed counterspell or two.  Your only hope is your sideboarded Sulfur Elementals or to be able to go off on an early enough turn that they either can not counter or you can get past a single counter.  Definitely a really bad match up.
Sideboard:
Out
2x Blood Moon
2x Ignite Memories
In
4x Sulfur Elemental
Reason
Ignite memories wont hit for too much compared to Empty the Warrens.  There are many point removal in these control decks from Repeal and Boomerang but not much mass removal.  Sulfur Elemental is your best bet.

Mono Green Aggro / G/W Glare:
These two decks play pretty much the same as an opponent so they are going together.  This becomes one of your best match ups.  Even though they can lay down a creature almost every turn, you can easily over run them with a empty the warrens.  After sideboard, a simple drop of Fortune thief wins the game.
Sideboard:
Out
2x Blood Moon
3x Ignite Memories
In
3x Fortune Thief
2x Seal of Fire
Reason
Fortune Thief becomes a win condition without a way for your opponent to get rid of it.  Seal of Fire also can kill your opponent’s small creatures.  Ignite Memories becomes useless do to the extremely low mana count of the deck.

Dredge:  This becomes an okay match up.  They have some heavy hitters from their graveyards such as Akroma, Angel of Wrath which can hit play fairly fast.  They mostly get their big creatures out turn three or four.  Yes, they can still swing for some heavy damage but by then hopefully they have fallen from your Ignite Memories with their high casting cost creatures, or over ran with their no mass removal from Goblin tokens.
Sideboard:
Out
-2 Blood Moon
-1 Rift Bolt
In
+3 Ignorant Bliss
Reason
With the heavy black, you may run into a Persecute from their sideboard.  This is a mono colored combo deck causing a simple persecute to end your game.

AngelFire:
This is a so-so match up.  They have a high mana costing deck which means your Ignite Memories becomes very useful, and there is no Wildfires usually played either.  The downside is that there are a few more counterspells added to the deck.  These have a low mana cost and are able to slow you down, you get by these though and you are in the clear.  Watch out though, this deck runs Pyroclasms and Wrath of God.  These can purpose major threats to you and ignite memories becomes much more useful then empty the warrens.
Sideboard:
Out
-3 Rift Bolt
-1 Empty the Warrens
In
+3 Sulfur Elemental
+1 Blood Moon
Reason
There are no creatures that Rift Bolt can hit which lowers its value by a lot.  Sulfur Elemental is un-counterable, which becomes a great help too.  Blood Moons stay in during this match up also since there are only 4-6 basic lands played by the deck.

Solar Flare:
The match up is pretty close to AngelFire.  Your ignite memories becomes the main win condition in the deck with wrath of gods being played.  There are also Persecutes main decked with more in the sideboard.  This is a major threat to you game 1, so you need to try to go off by turn 2-3 depending on signet situation.  If you can get an Ignite Memories for 5-6ish you should win the game.
Sideboard:
Out
-3 Rift Bolt
-1 Empty the Warrens
In
+3 Ignorant Bliss
+1 Blood Moon
Reason
With all of the discard in Persecute and Castigate, it becomes essential to keep your hand.  The rift bolts could hit your opponents life but not as worth as keeping your lands.  Also there are only 4-6 basic lands also so the blood moons become essential.

Fury of the Horde
I believe that this card deserves its own section.  There is no feeling better then stealing a win with Fury of the Horde.  Here are some examples.
Playing vs. a Gruul match up, I wasn’t able to draw anything and only had a hand full of lands and a few cards and a suspended Greater Gargadon.  When I was down to five life and about to loose looking down at my opponents three tapped creatures, I thought before I scooped it up.  I realized as my opponent was at eighteen life still, I sacked all my lands to bring Gargadon into play with no other permanents left.  Swinging for nine damage and then playing a Fury of the Horde for free gives you no better feeling.
Playing vs. Dragonstorm, a match up where it is essential to win as early as possible.  I swing with my tokens and deal my ten damage from ten tokens.  To make sure I win fast, I free play Fury of the Horde and win the game.  Only to have my opponent show me his hand that he would have go off the next turn.
Running only two of these cards is the right number.  They are not a necessity to the deck, but when you draw them, you are very happy.  There is no better feeling in Standard magic play to win by Fury of the Horde right before your opponent would win.

CONCLUSION

This deck has great match up vs. the aggro decks that are out there.  If you are playing against a control deck, it becomes much harder.  The only way to get used to a deck is to play it, practice it, and learn it.  If you do that with Goblin Storm, you will see how strong of a deck it is.
Future Sight is on its way out.  Currently, I have done any testing and have only taken a real quick glance at the spoiler.  Just as a future testing, the only card I could think of adding is Pyromancer’s Swath.  This can increase your Ignite Memories damage each time it would go off.
I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my article and hope you enjoyed!  Have fun playing no matter what deck you choose to run!

hm. I wonder why you don't run mishra's bauble. Nice article though.

1ST!!!!!

by sandoiche on 2007-04-24 19:32 MDT

gj fatdog!

now open mini for me :p

by BusDriver on 2007-04-24 19:49 MDT

this deck is so much better with dark confidant, infernal tutor and possibly howling mine.

by Pazzur on 2007-04-24 19:55 MDT

why dont you run lotus bloom?

by Stevesper on 2007-04-24 19:55 MDT

ok you wrote an article but the bottom line is goblin storm sucks and is one of those decks you laugh at in type 2 play

by coolcreep on 2007-04-24 20:11 MDT

You know i love you misty, just not your janky decklists.

by Ffancrzy on 2007-04-24 20:39 MDT

personally i dont see why you wouldn't run -3 spirit guide +3 lotus bloom...but thats just me

by nasa on 2007-04-24 20:43 MDT

this deck really is good, just on the cusp of being a real tier 1 player, and the reason for that is blood moon. seriously, im my build its 4 md, and with fs. maybe it will change to the magus but really that card just lets you sit back and set up your win

by cygnus_cl on 2007-04-24 20:48 MDT

nice article, matchups vs with FS?

by Wiley on 2007-04-24 21:09 MDT

I rate this article

bad/10

I also love how you once said that maindeck bloodmoon is retarded/noobish/etc. Anyways it's good to know that on top of being a tool, you're also a major spineless hypocrite who can't write.

my 300 card zoo build could beat this consistently

by Equinox- on 2007-04-24 21:31 MDT

He doesn't play bloom because it's too slow for him.

by MistyFatDog on 2007-04-24 22:33 MDT

ok to answer peoples questions, this deck is doing well for me, so far in league play it is 21-3. Also I dont run Lotus blooms because the deck can go off very easily on turn 1-2 and having a card you cant use until turn 3+ isnt worth the room.
oh and magus is very sub par to the real blood moon. alot more is being played regularly to kill creatures then enchantments
and if you go back and read maindeck blood moon with maindeck cyroclasm is what i was rantingg about

by Meatwarz on 2007-04-25 00:24 MDT

Why not to run run black for Confidant, Infernal Tutor, Brain Pry and some SB cards? With the right play control match ups become very very good (just because you have ridic high amount of mana and countering accel will only increase storm count). Seems better than a mono red than only hopes to goldfish turn1-3.

by MistyFatDog on 2007-04-25 01:00 MDT

it is a budget deck, i sold 804 worth of cards on ebay and would like to not spend as much irl, this is my irl deck

by TaZi on 2007-04-25 06:34 MDT

mmh.. I don't get, why you play Bloodmoon main. You side it out against 2/3 of the MUs

and the Tron MU decrease significantly when the Tronplayer runs Pyroclasm and/or trickbind

by MistyFatDog on 2007-04-25 07:42 MDT

but with trons hellkites and such ignite memories can be sleightly more effective

by Konnektion on 2007-04-25 08:24 MDT

what about mass removal? with damnnation and WoG floating around it seems they would be a problem for a "all in one shot" type deck like this.

by Cosmo on 2007-04-25 08:31 MDT

i think that you dont need sulfur elemental vs angelfire, they run no permision... only 4 remand.
also, his angels will be 4/3...

but nice article, i will test the deck in the fnm

by beule on 2007-04-25 09:40 MDT

I think storage lands are very good in this deck.

by SkaTista on 2007-04-25 14:39 MDT

astekas >>> all.

by BloodyAngel on 2007-04-25 15:12 MDT

dude i think u write it the wrong way, u must really be 3-21 with that crappy deck, unless u are playing against kids from a mental facility
shame on u! <3

by Wiley on 2007-04-25 15:31 MDT

"and if you go back and read maindeck blood moon with maindeck cyroclasm is what i was rantingg about"

Oh, did I forget to mention you bitching in #thenewtier1 about how much of a noob Revik is for maindecking blood moon? And how much I destroyed you with the simple fact that cryoclasm can't kill a tron piece or anything important and that blood moon is infinitely superior?

As usual I'm right

edit: In fact, you were so ardent about it that you actually banned me after for it! I can't believe people so irresponsible, immature and hormonal are allowed to be judges!

by Fakken on 2007-04-25 15:47 MDT

That new guy of FS which you return to hand to add 2R is a must on this deck... with one seething song you may do a warrens for 10 tokens

by MistyFatDog on 2007-04-25 23:13 MDT

yet again i was bitching because he ran a deck that had maindeck blood moon and maindeck cyroclasm... the two counteract each other. in his deck the maindeck blood moon was horrible. in a mono red deck, it isnt.

btw, wiley bite me.

and for everyone, test the deck and then rant on it, seriously. just reading and looking at something is never as good as playing. its how new decks are created, testing them, not just thinking gof them.

by yehudi on 2007-04-26 02:51 MDT

isnt the angelfire matchup and the solar flare matchup favorable cause of the maindeck bloodmoons those decks run almost as many nonbasics as tron does witch you list as a favorable matchup

by Revik on 2007-04-26 04:50 MDT

MD blood moon is no longer tech, fury of the horde isnt as good as you state although it might help the deck overall, and I fail to see why I should run this instead of dragonstorm.

Oh, and Wiley > You

:P

Hey revik get flores off your dick and go make some friends.

Your all dumb i hate you
I hope your house burns down.

by MistyFatDog on 2007-04-26 15:28 MDT

omg sparesocks ftw! like i said its a budget deck and its a great one for that

by Wiley on 2007-04-26 17:08 MDT

This deck is BAD. It runs out of gas faster than a car that runs out of gas really fast

by Wiley on 2007-04-26 19:08 EDT

This deck is BAD. It runs out of gas faster than a car that runs out of gas really fast

*seconds*

I'd rather run budget gruul or budget pickles or budget forest.dec than this jankityass shit.

by MistyFatDog on 2007-04-26 22:38 MDT

i like how i actually flame reviks deck and give tons of reasons why, revik just follows suit like wiley is his man pimp, which they are

by suprmilkchan on 2007-04-27 13:14 MDT

I tested this deck, and after I went off, my opponent killed my goblins. My opponent called me a newb! I cut my arms up after that, my mom asked me why I had all these scars on my arms and I told her

"THERE WAS NO TURN 1 GARGADON"

by Revik on 2007-04-27 13:47 MDT

MFD, your deck is bad and I'm not flaming, I'm just stating facts. My deck was metagaming, yours is just a bad attempt at a budget deck. Now we all know why you piss and moan about losing, because YOU SUCK!!!

by Wiley on 2007-04-27 15:51 MDT

"i like how i actually flame reviks deck and give tons of reasons why, revik just follows suit like wiley is his man pimp, which they are"

Allow me to direct you to this:

"While we were playing he MainDecked Blood Moons and Cyroclasms. WTF is that? I tried to tell him to help him that it was one of the dumbest things I have ever seen. That it should be maindeck cyroclasm and sideboard Blood Moon but he wouldnt even listen to my responses."

See that stupidity? This is essentially what you said. In fact this is exactly what you said, word for word.

Again, note the irony in your lack of an explanation or any semblance of intelligibility to the arguments aforesaid

by krowzy on 2007-04-27 15:57 MDT

Revik, any and all of the decks you post here are not teir 1 and are really really bad, so you aren't really in any position to talk. You're bad, and your team's bad too.

by Revik on 2007-04-28 07:10 MDT

Wow, some random named krowzy that I have never heard of before comes and flames me and he probably hasnt seen any decks I've posted except the gruul one (which was only for the metagame) so he think he has the right to tell me I suck.

Oh, and my team ownz.

by Daveslusher- on 2007-04-28 08:49 MDT

HEY WHY DID I GET DRAGGED INTO THIS?!?

by Revik on 2007-04-28 09:15 MDT

You didnt, my team is Jacois and some randoms

by MistyFatDog on 2007-04-28 09:30 MDT

u have 0 team points :-0

by MistyFatDog on 2007-04-28 09:31 MDT

if you learn to read wiley, he was still using cyroclasm. cyroclasm is a very dumb card for this deck thus making blood moon better cause i dont care about ld, his was a ld deck.... so go learn to deck build and shut up

by Wiley on 2007-04-28 10:15 MDT

"if you learn to read wiley, he was still using cyroclasm. cyroclasm is a very dumb card for this deck thus making blood moon better cause i dont care about ld, his was a ld deck.... so go learn to deck build and shut up"

Thank you for qualifying your statements with solid explanations..oh wait

by Revik on 2007-04-28 12:14 MDT

I just joined Jacois's team, MFD. Also, learn something it took me a while to learn: SUPPORT YOUR ARGUMENTS WITH VALID EXPLANATIONS!

Rather than:

"so go learn to deck build and shut up"

That's called insulting, not making a solid argument.

by BloodyAngel on 2007-04-28 23:31 MDT

revik, wiley & misty <3 for the 3 of u

by dennooze on 2007-04-29 08:56 MDT

This deck is quite solid to be honest. It's so much better than the original TSPS. And also I never thought of putting Fury of the Horde. It's seriously good if you are playing against a control deck which they use wrath of god/damnation to clear table.

Imagine you have 12 goblins in play and one turn you can dish out 12 dmg to your opponent, with fury, you can deal double of it. So why not ? Maybe putting it in main board might not be good against some deck but it's good against control decks without much counters.

The only drawbacks of Fury of The Horde is the high casting cost and need for removing 2 cards which is not so cost efficient in this deck. Still it's quite an interesting deck and it's certainly a Superb BUDGET deck.

Great job MistyFatDog.

by Revik on 2007-04-29 09:12 MDT

Or you just Wrath and all the goblins die, didja ever think of that dennooze?

This deck loses to discard, decks with a wrath effect, decks that are creature-based with a decent tempo, counterspells, trickbind, pyroclasm, good players.

This deck beats new players, shitty hands, and any deck Flores runs.

by Wiley on 2007-04-29 10:04 MDT

"Imagine you have 12 goblins in play and one turn you can dish out 12 dmg to your opponent, with fury, you can deal double of it. So why not ? Maybe putting it in main board might not be good against some deck but it's good against control decks without much counters."

Pray tell me how you rack up your storm count to 6 in a reasonable amount of time while still having 2 red cards in your hand, on top of the fury of the horde you happen to be carrying?

Test a deck before you play with it. This is a pile and it doesn't help that the person running it has no credibility whatsoever

ok to answer peoples questions, this deck is doing well for me, so far in league play it is 21-3. Also I dont run Lotus blooms because the deck can go off very easily on turn 1-2 and having a card you cant use until turn 3+ isnt worth the room.

LOLZ...have u realized wut league it is that u r talkin about? this is magic-league. i doubt there are more than 30 players on here over 1800

by castigador on 2007-04-30 18:56 MDT

i been plaing goblin storm fo some fnm and is a fun a quick deck but i put word of sezing that is very good vs deck with teferi and a special thank to castigador for the idea of goblin storm

by Revik on 2007-05-01 13:46 MDT

but does your goblin storm use some shittyass jank like fury of the horde? does yours lack lotus bloom?

the point is that if you are running storm with fury and without bloom, you dont deserve to call yourself "good", you just deserve to die.

by Grandhero on 2007-05-02 22:55 MDT

assuming that Blood Moon does what I think it does (completely screws up non basic lands), then I am going to be buying 4 of them immediately. It's already good by itself let alone when you have Goblin King out as well. Thanks for the tip guys! With Blood Moon this deck definetely has a fighting chance.

by MistyFatDog on 2007-05-04 09:43 MDT

revik learn to play, why would i run lotus bloom if i can go off turn 1-2 over 70 percent of the time? seriously either test the deck or go jump a bridge... learn to play... notice how itsonly you and wiley ranting about the deck... i finish with you shouldnt ever be allowed to touch a magic card again
